Have the mpan (elec) or mpr (gas) and serial number of the meter plus a current reading.
Unless you live in Glamis Castle, there’s no chance this is a correct estimation of next year’s consumption.
Have you recently moved in? Have you ever provided readings before? Are you certain that you’re reading the meter correctly? I’d guess there’s been a couple of extra digits added to a meter reading. E.g. 864211 instead of 8642.
* Based on the history of use at that property they reckon you will pay a total of around £16,550.82 over the next 12 months.
* At present your account is currently £90.63 in credit
* They have subtracted your credit (£90.63) from what they suspect you’ll pay (£16,550.82) which gives them the total of £16,460.19.
* They then divide that amount (£16,460.19) by 12 (to figure out your monthly payments).
* 16460.19 ÷ 12 = 1,371.68
* They have just rounded that up to the nearest £1 to make £1,372 per month
Now, the amounts seems absolutely mental unless you’re running a business. If you’re running a home there’s obviously something gone a bit awry here unless you live in a palace or have a growing operation in your loft.
How long have you been in the property and are you giving regular readings, are you reading your meter correctly? If you’re relatively new to the property I’d also maybe check with them to see if you’ve not been dumped with the previous tenant/owner’s debt.
Haha! Nope just a regular energy bill here. Any thoughts on how to make sense on these calculations.
Thanks for the info, I’ll definitely look into getting this adjusted.
Hopefully it’s an easy fix
Take the advice from others and once this is sorted, get a new supplier. Scottish Power are **literally** the worst company possible.
Absolute shower of bastards.
If you’re certain that your readings are correct then it might be that the previous owner or tenant gave an incorrect final reading or never gave a reading at all or had a huge debt which has now fallen into your account.
If you have accurate monthly or quarterly readings then it’s fairly easy to calculate what your electricity bills should be like by multiplying the rate per kWh (should be about 27p on the current price cap) x the number of units you are using plus the number of days (say 30) x the standing charge (should be around 61p on the current price cap).
So if you’re Mr Average family using 2700 kWh per year (Ofgem figures), then your cost should be:
2700 x 27p = £729 per year
Plus
365 x 61p = £223
Total £952 per year
or just under £80 per month.
If you are a single person out working during the day, then I would expect your cost to be much less.
A single person in a smaller flat or 1-bedroom house might use around 1,800 kWh annually (Uswitch figures), but it obviously depends on your home size, lifestyle, appliance use, etc.
But again, if you’re Mr. Average single person, then that would imply about £700 per year or about £60 per month.
The figures for gas are 7p per kWh and 32.67p per day.
A typical family uses about 11,500 kWh per year and a single person around 7,500 kWh.
So that would work out like this:
7500 x 7p = £525
Plus
365 x 32.67p = £119
Total £644 or a bit over £50 per month.
Obviously your own costs depend on the heating you use.
Total Electricity and Gas
Approximately £1300 per year
or about
£110 per month.
You also need to check what tariffs you’re on, but it can’t be higher than the current price cap.
Hope this helps. Once you’ve worked out your estimated costs, give them a call because there’s something far wrong.
If you can’t work out your costs, PM me your readings, and I’ll do it for you.
*squint*
I’ve got a sneaky feeling that the morons haven’t closed the account down for the previous occupier or are somehow using the history from the previous occupier to estimate your usage (which is *verboten*). Mind you – *are* you reading the meter correctly? Is it a digital meter (which are easy enough) or is it one of the godforsaken clock-face meters?
When you get in touch with the gimps, ask them to tell you what the opening read was on your account – is it actual or estimated, etc. If it’s an estimate – and if they’ve got actual reads from *you* that cover the entire three months of your being in the property – demand that they recalculate the opening reads.
It could also be typical Scottish Power fucking around with things yet again. They have one of the worst reputations in the industry for being twattish when it comes to billing (what do you expect, given the calibre of staff they employ) but do *not* accept that calculation. They’ve fucked up.
You are powering Scotland by that estimate
How many kWh does it estimate you’ll use?
all great advice – but i would be having a bit of sarcasm with them on the phone like tell them u were thinking about increasing the DD amount to build up a bit of credit for future years – ask them if that would be a good idea or not.
I also got a ridiculous bill and monthly DD when I moved into my last flat with Scottish Power.
They are literally the worst company in any industry I’ve ever had the displeasure to deal with and I don’t know why the ombudsman and Ofgem aren’t totally sick of them and get them shut down.
Speak to someone until they understand why they are wildly incorrect figures and tell you what they’re going to do to make it right. Be sure to make a complaint if it’s not sorted there and then – they have 8 weeks or something to make it right before the ombudsman can step in so get that ball rolling as fast as you can.
And once it’s resolved, switch to another provider.
We have similar issues (although not to that extent) with our OVO Energy bill.
My bills are around £150 in winter (heating) and now with the heating off around £110 a month. But when I want to pay by direct debit they estimate £250 which is just nuts.
Not sure if Scottish power and Scottish gas are the same. If they are, I’d avoid both of them.
Had issues with them not sending me correct bills for 6 months after we moved and said I never gave them meter readings and chased £400 for about a year until I went to citizen advice and they filed a complaint and now the threatening letters stopped, but still no apologies or confirmation that they stopped coming after that money.
Your EAC is incorrect, most likely due to an incorrect reading somewhere on the previous account. Call them up, ask them to check that.
They all do this to a lesser extent.
I’m on Octopus, for a full year I put £200 a month in the direct debit for leccy and gas. Starting from £0 in the account and ended up with like +£17. So I went through all seasons.
Get an email from them (remember cost is trending downwards at the moment), yeah we’ve looked at your account and moved it to £450 a month.
Immediately emailed them back ranting about “how could it possibly double when energy is trending downwards and £200 a month has go me through winter and summer with a positive balance”. Got a standard reply “thats what we calculate, blah blahm we’ll set it back to £200”
I think they have a badly trained neural network looking at energy usage and setting direct debit costs automatically, as no person is doing this
Are you running a cannabis farm?
Seems a bit daft but one of my friends used to live in Glasgow, kept getting daft estimates and entered into a full year war with SP.
They discovered that the landlord had, some years ago, got a new meter installed but the old one had never been decommissioned properly so they effectively got two readings for the same flat. To add to it, the previous bill had never been cleared so they had two meter readings added to an already historic bill
Hey, if you’re running an EV charging business from your flat, this seems normal.
This isn’t you, it’s Scottish power that’s the problem. It is my strongly held belief, based on a huge body of evidence, that they are not capable of conducting the business of selling power.
The only thing you’re doing wrong is staying with Spanish Power
I’ve been paying £200 a month for a tiny 2 bed flat, for over 1.5 years. Finally got out of the “debt” they stated I owed, though no matter how many times I’ve requested, did not show any working if how they got to the number they did.
Changed supplier, and pay my actual usage. I paid £78 this month. Bunch of cunts. Swap ASAP.

Seems fairly straight forward, unless I’m missing something obvious?
