(WJAR) — The check is in the mail!
T-Mobile customers who were victims of a data breach could soon see some cash.
Bentley University professor and creator of scamicide.com Steve Weisman said it’s part of a $350-million settlement after T-Mobile unintentionally exposed private information, such as the Social Security numbers of tens of millions of customers.
Weisman said the settlement is meant to reimburse customers who spent a lot of money cleaning up after their identities were stolen.
But even if your identity wasn’t stolen, there could be some cash for you.
“People who had to pay money to clear their name or their credit are getting much more,” said Weisman. “Everyone else is only getting a pittance.”
He said your settlement check depends on which state you live in.
“In California, you’re getting $100,” said Weisman. “In Rhode Island, you’re getting $25.”
That being said, if there’s money left over, you could be entitled to more.
“After these initial payments are made, if there is money left, everyone who was a victim of the scam will get an additional amount spread out equally among the victims,” said Weisman.
He also warned, if you receive an email or a text asking for additional information in relation to this settlement, it’s likely a scammer trying to capitalize on the news.
