Despite a year spent on the bubble at Bayern Munich, Portuguese midfielder João Palhinha remains an important part of his country’s men’s national team — and he appeared as a late substitute in Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Germany in Stuttgart.
The result sends Germany — which features many of Palhinha’s Bayern Munich teammates — down to the Nations League third place match, while he and Portugal advance to the Final in Munich, where they will face the winner of France vs. Spain.
After the match, Palhinha could only console his club comrades.
“I’ve spoken to [Serge] Gnabry and [Aleksandar] Pavlović. The others were a bit more upset. They congratulated me and I told them that we’d be together next week. We have the Club World Cup to play for,” Palhinha explained in post-match remarks captured via @iMiaSanMia.
It will be a busy summer for the Bayern squad.
