A sad sight to see – do people in Ireland really use Temu that much?

  1. I don’t get the obsession with Temu, Amazon, etc, if I’m buying something I’m buying it in a shop or from a brand I’ve checked seven ways to Sunday. Don’t even get me started on the state of their clothing.

  2. What a lovely map of capitalistic imperialism. Might go in with me 18 housemates on a print and stick it in the kitchen/bathroom as a conversation opener.

  3. I’m guilty of sometimes using TEMU and SHEIN.
Maybe once or twice a year.

  4. Downloaded doesn’t mean bought. It easy to download and just have a look !

  5. I went from wish to AliExpress and haven’t changed since.
I tried Temu after I fell for this “spin the wheel” nonsense which you never lose… and then I won 3 free items which were magically out of stock.

Deleted my order and ordered on AliExpress instead lol.

  6. i love clothes and fashion. like 2-3 years ago i used to constantly buy clothes off of shein and wear them once and then never wear them again, but i was also thrifting constantly but i could never get anything

then when i stopped buying clothes off of shein last year i managed to get tons of clothes between last year and this summer. i never buy any of my clothes from fast fashion or anything now, like i never buy off of shein or anytbing anymore. í thrift everything, it’s great.

  7. I downloaded it, realised it was shite, then uninstalled it.

  8. I don’t know if this counts as a download, but i recently upgraded my phone for the first time in years and temu was one of the preinstalled apps.

  9. They advertise a lot. End of last year I got a Temu ad on every video and a lot on Instagram. So that explains the lots of downloads. Does that translate to actual usage?

  10. Got a few clothes on Temu. Expectations were low but I was pleasantly surprised. Delighted with the quality. Got a load of garden stuff as well.

  11. I can get past people not knowing or caring about the sustainability, overconsumption and exploitation aspect of it, but I can’t wrap my head around how people are okay with buying shit quality stuff without even looking at it, not because they have a reduced budget but because they actually think it’s cool. I’d rather buy one good piece than 10 Temu pieces of plastic that look cheap, feel cheap and will either disintegrate or be ridiculously out of fashion within the next few months.

  12. Yes But what kind of country would say “yes! Threads!!! That’s the one for me!”

    Finns are weird.

  13. Literally nothing I ‘need’ on any of these shite online shops. Absolute muck that people do not need on most of them, and terrible quality as well. I’d rather buy far less, pay more, and have it last 10 times as long, than this throw away, hyper capitalistic culture that’s all over the western world now.

  14. Will not download, hate the ads, wish it didn’t exist (bit there is a lot of those apps!

  15. I can’t wait until Signal breaks out of the Netherlands and we can all fuck whatsapp/Meta off once and for all.

  16. I think some phones come with it pre installed as bloat. And it’s heavily advertised also.

  17. Yes. Where else can I get 30 items I don’t need with a delivery in 2 days time for a gross price of €1.50 plus 90% discount cos it’s Wednesday.

Honestly I bought a couple of things on it which were good. Like a plastic bottle bin and a flexible stick-on magnetic white board. But then I stopped buying anything because I have kids and wised up.

  18. Never used it once but to be fair not many of the apps shown on that map are something to be proud of.

  19. Yeah HUGELY popular amongst 70 year olds. My parents and their friends are addicted to getting all the gadgets.

  20. I am not surprised it was the most popular, I downloaded the app, they have great promotions and free delivery to encourage people to buy from them. A loss leader to gain market share I suspect.

I got a gear bag and that was it. I haven’t bought from them since, I suspect most other people download the app to check things out and never bought anything.

  21. Klarna is the next thing I see people using.

A fool and their money are soon parted I guess.

  22. Our post man said most parcels he delivers these days are Temu, van is constantly full to the brim with them

  23. I’ve bought a good few t – shirts, socks and hats from Temu, quality has always been pretty good tbh.

I’d never buy technology or anything that should cost 100s but they are selling for €5.

    It has its uses.

  24. I’ll tell you what’s sad. Sad is paying 8€ for something when I can get 3 of and pay them 1€ by cutting the middle man.

  25. I’ve gotten loads of stuff off Temu. Find it very handy.

  26. I’d be far more concerned with the volume of ChatGPT downloads than people buying things cheap

  27. There’s plenty of hills I die on that I feel bad about, Temu isn’t one of them.

I bought some things for around the house earlier this week. Storage boxes, containers, kitchen utensils etc. €50. That same stuff was €80 on amazon for the same stuff, literally the exact same items.

If I wanted to ‘buy local’, it was easily 5x the price and most of the stuff wasn’t available. A set of corner shelves for the wall were €18 on Temu and the exact same stuff was €45 in Dunnes, the only corner shelves my local furniture shop had were, no joke, €65.

They can absolutely go and fuck off, sincerely. I am not about to pay through the nose so that Bridie or John can stay in business, charging people extortionate prices. At this stage I do not give a fuck, the people who gave me shit 2 years ago are now piggybacking off my Temu account to have stuff sent to them and they’ll send me the money.

I am not going to pay multiple times the price so this country can continue to rip me off and take the piss about it. So it’s honestly not a sad sight to see at all, because the solution to this shouldn’t be that people just suck it up and pay extra for it. These websites aren’t going anywhere, I am not going to break the wheel. It’ll keep turning whether I participate or not, so at least this way I have a little more money available at the end of the day.
