From David Stahel’s excellent book ‘Operation Barbarossa and Germany’s Defeat in the East’.
Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union, began the largest and most costly campaign in military history. Its failure was a key turning point of the Second World War. The operation was planned as a Blitzkrieg to win Germany its Lebensraum in the East, and the summer of 1941 is well-known for the German army’s unprecedented victories and advances.
Yet the German Blitzkrieg depended almost entirely upon the motorised Panzer groups, particularly those of Army Group Centre. Using previously unpublished archival records, David Stahel presents a new history of Germany’s summer campaign from the perspective of the two largest and most powerful Panzer groups on the Eastern front.
Stahel’s research provides a fundamental reassessment of Germany’s war against the Soviet Union, highlighting the prodigious internal problems of the vital Panzer forces and revealing that their demise in the earliest phase of the war undermined the whole German invasion.
I’ve heard that both the year the Nazis and the year the French invaded were the coldest on record at their respective points.
At least for Napoleon I’ve also heard that the devastating effects of poor logistics in the east manifested way before winter came. If fact it was the spring mud that troubled the supply wagons. Clean water was hard to come by and many of the auxiliaries deserted into banditry.
Oh boy, a Soviet propaganda poster on r/europe. Let me get my popcorn.
They shouldn’t bunch that scum with Napoleon!
Prophetic.
I see a shredded Molotov Ribbentrop pact there
If WW2 was started at 1939 and USSR prefer to speak about Great Patriotic War that started at 1941 then how Soviet Union participated in these activities during 1939-1941?
Without to dismiss the gigantic number of victims from Soviet Union the WW 2 is a bit more complicated than what Soviet and today Russian propaganda spill out.
First, Nazi Germany and Soviet Union (Russian empire under a different name) were actually allies for couple years into war (1939 to 1941), splitting Europe together under the infamous Molotov-Ribentrop pact. German panzers rushing through France were moving with Russian oil for example.
Secondly, just as in Napoleon case, it was actually a rather big alliance that Russia/USSR was part of at each time. Without USA pulling Japan into Pacific war theater Stalin wouldn’t have been able to bring the far east divisions into the defence of Moscow. He also sacrificed Richard Sorge, the superspy who informed him that Japan won’t attack USSR but will focus on the Pacific region, allowing him to bring the reinforcements that saved Moscow.
There is also the Lend Lease program, sending huge amounts of material help to USSR, then the landing in Sicily who made Hitler to retreat the main heavy armored divisions from Kursk to be send in Italy, allowing the Soviets to eventually win the battle, one of the most crucial on Eastern front.
There are also other events that helped USSR (and allies) to push further for victory
Hitler suffered defeat and so will Putin!
“Ive dealt with those sneaky russians”
There’s something so funny about seeing the word Gitler. I know it’s how consonant sounds work in Russian, but it’s just funny.
Had this in my textbook!

The victory over hitler was much sweeter, because of the droning on and on by hitler of the “master race.” Watching Paulus, the architect of babarossa, groveling to the soviets, in his shabby uniform, to a group of peasants was glorious.

This poster was released alongside a song if my memory serves me right. Though I can’t find it right now.
And they both did.

I love how older and powerful countries play up their importance. I mean it’s usually one of the 3 big pigs. chaiiina, uSSa and ruSSia. But some European countries play the same way. The allies did most the heavy lifting, didn’t make any “deal” with the Nazis and didn’t try to make peace with them. The ruSSia and uSSa did not get involved for moral or ideological reasons. They got involved because their friends and allies needed the help. Even then it took the attack on these 2 “superpowers” (LMFAO) before they budged. But In hindsight, they like to make.themselves out as not only heroes but victims of evil. When in reality they didn’t give two shits. Unsurprisingly China was involved too, not for ideological or moral reasons. But because Japan bad, hurt my feelings. The Chinese hid behind the British and Americans to fight the Japanese. The world and humanity has really gotten fucked with these 3 filthy degenerate extremist nations in charge of international affairs. At least the Americans have a small shred of decency left in them…… I hope. But that is increasingly in doubt. Biden and Trump are perfect examples of Americans decline, morally, ethically and geopolitically. Pax Americana is over. Hopefully, the vaccum isn’t filled with CCP and Kremlin supporting filth.
After Napoleon’s failed invasion of Russia, he made a prize for the person who could preserve food for a year or more….the person who one created canned vegetables, won what would be equivalent to $10 million today…
And they both did. It’s remarkable how similar both military campaigns were on many aspects. Especially when it came to General Winter dealing with the invaders.
