The European Union has decided to extend the preferential trade regime with Ukraine in the field of iron and steel products, aiming to support the Ukrainian economy amid ongoing aggression from Russia. This information was published on the official website of the European Council.
The document states:
“Today, the EU Council adopted new regulatory rules that continue the suspension of the EU’s safeguard measures on iron and steel to support Ukraine’s economy during Russia’s aggressive war. This decision aims to ease the difficulties faced by Ukrainian producers due to the war.”
Additionally, the European Commission has been granted the authority to suspend the regulatory act for certain types of products for up to 12 months. Such a decision may be made if imports of these goods from Ukraine threaten the stability of European production.
This regulation will come into effect on June 6 and will remain in force for three years.
The EU’s safeguard measures on steel casting imports were introduced in 2018 to protect European producers from the crisis of overproduction. However, as part of support for Ukraine during Russian aggression, the country was exempted from these measures.
