On June 5th, Thursday, Latvian Saeima deputy Aleksey Roslikov, representing the “Stability!” party, was suspended from participating in the parliamentary session. The reason for this was his speech in Russian.
According to information published by Delfi, during the discussion of the declaration “on the elimination of the consequences of Russification,” the deputy violated the Saeima’s regulations by using the Russian language.
Roslikov noted that “Russian speakers also stood on the barricades alongside Latvians.” He also expressed the opinion that various laws and state decisions “bombarded our families,” referring to Russian-speaking families.
The deputy emphasized that a significant part of Latvia’s population consists of Russians who communicate in Russian at home daily and actively participate in the country’s development. In his view, without this community, Latvia will not be able to achieve progress.
At the end of his speech, Roslikov shouted in Russian: “There are more of us! Russian is our language!” and made a rude gesture. As a result, the decision was made to suspend him from the session and expel him from the hall.
It is worth noting that on September 20, 2024, the Latvian parliament finally approved amendments to the law on credit institutions, which prohibit the use of the Russian language on ATMs of Latvian financial institutions.
From now on, ATMs must be set to the Latvian language (including Latgalian), and may also use the official languages of European Union member states and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) or candidate countries for accession to this bloc.
