I think we need this on the M1 & M2

  1. They get ignored quick.
Plenty of helpful advice for the idiot posted all over Scotland and England, don’t drink and drive, no drugs and driving, check your oil , it’s raining , don’t drive tired etc etc…do they work , meh ?

  2. Live in England – It doesn’t work. Drove down the English m1 last weekend with cruise control on, spent half of it swinging around an idiot who kept speeding up and slowing down in the middle lane

  3. The bigger problem imo is when you do overtake some prick usually in a bmw is up your arse demanding you get out of the way.

  4. To be honest I blame the decisions made at the design of stages of both Motorways that totally ignored the psychology of driving.

This may be just me, but when I’m driving into Belfast along the M2 I’m thinking about what will happen as I get further along the road. The Greencastle exit, the M5,M2 merge. This makes me sit in the middle lane as I’m anticipating both of these, as well as other lane changes later on.

The same is true as I head back to the glengormley exit, I’ll sit in the left lane quite happily. But, if I’m heading to Antrim, I’ll sit in the middle lane.

So I may be a terrible driver for anticipating lane changes 3 to 5 miles ahead. But I do and many of us do.

I feel justified in blaming the designers (Ultimately, their political masters for lack of consistent funding) for the mess in road infrastructure in and around Belfast, including this.

We drivers are human beings, understanding this and the psychology of driving is fundamental to road design.

  5. No, we need more public service messages carrying Highway Code and updates. Radio, tv social media.

It’s one thing to say left lane unless overtaking but the mother fucker doesn’t explain fa to the 70s license holder “you are holding up everyone because you need to turn right in two miles, move over when approaching junction signage“

  6. Every now and then if it’s a clear unaware lane hogger in the fast lane they get a wee flash, but most people genuinely trying to overtake

  7. I pulled out on the M2 earlier to overtake and back in again straight away. The whole time, there was a taxi driver going about 65-70 in the outside lane just ahead of me. Police come up the motorway behind him, he doesn’t move despite the inside lane being empty in front of me. Police actually had to flash him to move and even then, he didn’t move straight away. And this guy is a “professional” driver. No hope.

  8. I was in Tenerife this month and the standard of driving on the Spanish motorways and dual carriageways blew me away. No one hogging the overtaking lane, traffic as a result moved much faster.

There was a broken down car in one of the tunnels at night and I knew about it because on approach to the tunnel everyone ahead of me (about 100 cars) all put on their hazard warning lights, slowed right down and continued at about 30 mph towards the hazard. When the police came up behind us, all the drivers parted down the middle of the dual carriageway and made a lane for them. Then, to top it off, with one lane closed by the broken down car and the peelers checking they were ok, as we approached the blockage all the cars from lane one merged *in turn* into lane two with not so much as a brake light never mind horns blaring.

Compared to the selfish, thick wankers on the roads here – driving in a foreign country with less stress than my daily commute was absolutely surreal & very refreshing.

  9. They will see that as only a suggestion for everyone one else but them.

  10. And that driver is still hogging the middle lane with not another vehicle in the vicinity! 🤦🏻‍♂️
