On Tuesday evening, I spotted a ginger tomcat lying in the middle of the busy Kingscourt–Nobber Road. He had clearly been hit by a car and was in a bad way, with traffic just swerving around him. No one had stopped.
Put the hazards on and got out but didn’t have a towel or carrier with me, so I just gently lift him into the car. While doing so, he bit me on the arm, totally understandable considering how much pain he was in. I later needed a tetanus shot and antibiotics, so that’s definitely something to be aware of if your vaccines aren’t up to date.
From there, I contacted two local vets, one of which was still open and only five minutes away. Neither would take him in, and neither offered any practical help like a carrier. Their only advice was “be careful, injured cats can be aggressive.” It just added more stress to an already tense situation.
With no other options, I drove home to collect my husband so he could sit in the back and keep the cat calm while I drove. We then made the hour-long journey to Highfield Vets in Navan, who were out of hours but agreed straight away to help. They were kind, calm, and didn’t hesitate, I genuinely can’t thank them enough.
The cat (who had a bit of an accident in the car, so a valet is now very much needed!) was taken in and treated. Two days later, his owners got in touch with the vets after seeing posts online. It turns out his name is Ginge Ginge, and thankfully, he’s now back home. He may need to have a back leg amputated, but he’s safe and otherwise doing well.
After this, I’ll definitely be keeping a small animal emergency kit in the car, a towel or blanket, gloves, and a cat carrier, just in case. If you ever come across an injured animal, please stop if it’s safe to do so. Even if it’s stressful and things don’t go smoothly, it’s worth it.
TL;DR: A ginger cat was hit by a car and left on the road. Two local vets refused to help, but Highfield Vets in Navan took him in, out of hours. He’s now been reunited with his owners and recovering. Always stop if you can , all animals deserve compassion.

That cat’s some boyo.
The world needs more people like you OP, fair play to you.

You’re owed big time Op for the amount of heartache you probably saved a family
Name and shame the vets that wouldn’t help – Ps hats off to you!
OP wow. Would love to go with the valet costs. You’re a hidden gem
Good job OP. You’re a decent skin.
Thank you so much for helping that little angel OP!!

You’re unbelievable for helping a small creature in need and returning it to its family. You’re absolutely brilliant !!
Absolute hero, saved the cats life and saved a family from despair. I do hate to tell you that cat pee is unbelievably hard to get out, your car may still smell after the valet.
Thank you for helping. You get all the good vibes today.
Thank you for helping him OP, you’re a good person. I bet his family were absolutely thrilled to have him back. Hopefully he’ll make a full recovery but even if he doesn’t he’ll be loved just as much, 3 legs or 4.
I hope you recover quickly from the bite. My neighbour’s cat bit me a few years ago and I had to get a tetanus and antibiotics too, but no ill effects thankfully.
I have a lovable ginger boy myself (and his tortie sister) and they’re usually very friendly but understandably that poor little guy was spooked at the time.
You did a lovely thing OP. The world needs more people like you.
Bless you! What an amazing thing to do and if only there were more people like you!
Fair play to you OP, you saved a family’s little baby there with your actions! You’re one of the good ones👍🏼🐈
Great stuff. Hopefully this post will inspire more to do like you
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for doing this and saving Ginge Ginge. This is the sort of thing that makes me believe in humanity.
Super!! Just to add to your ‘Animal Emergency Kit’ (which is such a good idea)…
Pop in some cat/dog food pouches (not tins) and plastic bowl(s) to hold food and water. Treats are also helpful.
Some injured or stray animals are hungry and will ‘fight through their fear’ if they are going to be fed. It can help ‘catch’ them if necessary.
Thank you for being such a decent human being!! 🙂
Well done! You are so kind and I am so glad this kitty is now on the mend 💓🙏
Fair play, OP. One of my cats was hit by a car and unfortunately killed just outside my house, so I have absolutely no doubt at all how much this means to Ginge Ginge’s family. Pity the two vets weren’t of the same calibre as yourself.
I love ya OP
Thank you ❤️
Great news! You’re a star ♥️
Thanks so much, you saved that little fellows life and brought him back to his family.
You’re a good egg OP. Thank you for looking out for the little lad. People are too dismissive of cats
Total hero and your husband too. Glad Ginge Ginge will make a recovery! Poor little fella.
Bless you OP! May we all show such care and compassion towards vulnerable creatures 💞
You absolute legend!
If there’s any smell left after the clean enzymatic cleaners are fantastic.
I’ve found this very good. But I know that zooplus also stocks some.
Enzymes break down the uric acid. For something like a car seat with lots of stuffing to soak up liquid and impossible to remove from the car it’s great.
You did a really great thing. It’s a persistent fear of mine that if he got out he would get in an accident and that he would suffer and die preventably.

Well done for helping him!
As a cat owner whose cat is a huge part of my heart, thank you. While you were hurt and put out, you’ve saved a family an unnecessary heartbreak.
Fair play OP.
A few years ago, on the way back from a funeral I passed a black kitten on the road. I was in a foul mood. I’m a cunt when I’m that way. But It kept popping up in my mind after the short drive home. Well no word of a lie, after about ten minutes of thinking I got a phone call from some friends who were also at the funeral, who were on their way to a party with a surplus to requirements black kitten that they hoped to offload on me…
The universe works in mysterious ways. It’s nice to have redemption delivered to you on a vomit stained car mat.
Our cats wouldn’t take to him, but he went to a house with an older female cat who did.
i love u ginge ginge
Fair play to you OP!
Thank you for helping the cat. The world needs more people like you. I wish you nothing but great things 💚
My dog thinks youre a traitor but i think youre a legend 😎👉
Well done 👏
