EU could shelve Brexit trade deal if UK triggers article 16, Irish minister warns

  1. Many of the UK’s Brexiters always wanted a No Deal Brexit, so perhaps it’s not surprising they are doing everything they can into goading the EU into giving them one.

If that is the UK government’s plan, they are handing Sinn Féin the opportunity of a lifetime.

They are the largest party now on both sides of the Irish border. The next elections in Ireland will almost certainly see them hold the job of First Minister In the North and Prime Minister in the South.
No Deal Brexit (which the UK seems to want) and a hard border was the only thing that ever got unification support above 50% in NI in polls.

  2. But then France gets no fish. I’ve a feeling France doesn’t give a damn about Irelands issues, as was seen with France gleefully helping remove Ireland’s competitive corporation taxes.

France will not let the TCA fall to no deal, as it will have to give up all the fishes.

I would LOVE a trade war with the UK. It would crush them. Second indyref + reunited Ireland and then they are destroyed forever. A real possibility, not just dreams anymore.

  4. Suez Crisis (EU version) in sight.

Would not be surprised if the EU immediately move towards retaliatory measures as they’re *already* in talks. Escalating from talks are naturally sanctions. EU suspending the TCA would be logical, and reverting to WTO tariff rates would be equivalent to a massive sanction.

And as we can see from sanctions……depending on how serious it is the UK has precedent in folding immediately and forfeiting critical assets doing so. That’s what happened with the Crisis and the Canal.

Demand would probably be more mild this time around thankfully, probably just to return to what works, meaning chaining the government to the Single Market and Customs Union. Not even that big a deal considering standards have not diverged too much yet.

Also, I wouldn’t rule out the US also jumping in against the UK for their own second coming of Suez. They’re bipartisan in both branches of government with seeing the NIP as critical to maintaining the GFA, and have gone as far as formally signing resolutions as such. They’re also gearing up for elections and last thing they want is GFA being threatened on their watch.

The “We totally won’t get punished, we’re too important!” behavior is repeating history, I suppose.

  5. I’m gonna piss myself from laughter if the UK loses NI and Scotland over brexit.
Only thing they have then is wales, right?

  6. Good. If Brussels and Dublin are going to act as expansionist emperors and try to extend their jurisdiction beyond their own territory, why would we reward that with a trade deal?

  7. Is it just me or are Brexit-related comment sections becoming even more toxic than they already were?

I do mean in international forums, within Britain it’s always been…spicy
