  1. From the article “A plan to reintroduce wolves to Japan more than a century after they were hunted to extinction is gaining traction as conservationists warn that the country’s rural ecosystems are increasingly out of balance and costly to maintain due to booming wild animal populations.”

  2. And we’ll get Gorillas to eventually fight off the wolves

  3. This is what happens when you have zero apex predators. Herbivores be overproducing and over eating the local vegetation

  4. They can also ride on the wolves’ backs and shoot arrows and look really badass.

  5. Worked in Yellowstone I believe. Been a while since I read about it.

  6. The Marauding Monkeys should be the name of a sports team.

  7. I mean they had perfectly good island sized native subspecies of wolves.

They hunted them to extinction in the Meiji era.

  8. I am NOT a fan of nuisance mpnkeys

I do not see how they are tolerated in a lot of asian countries. I have seen videos of gangs of them running amok in cities.

  9. They were reintroduced in Denmark in 2012, after having been gone for 200 years, and their population seems to be growing nicely.

There’s a lot of skepticism about safety, but no one has been attacked by one since.

  10. this is a totally true story: from 2001 to 2003 I lived in rural Northern Japan and I was an assistant language teacher with The JET program, volunteered with a local veterinarian who was originally from Tokyo, and helped him thwart the hordes of macaques that ravaged the local crops of Akita’s agriculture on the border of Aomroi prefecuture. We wore camo, used fireworks and soft-pellet guns, cages, dart-guns and and nets. It was called SARUJA (Saru is monkey in Japanese) – Special Animal Reconassaince Unit Japan Agriculture.

Time of my life–I was in my early 20s.

Chasing monkeys in Japan. Stories to tell!

His name was Yasuhito Imai. Mr. Imai, if you’re reading… I miss you and Norico, old buddy.

  11. plot twist – the monkeys start riding the wolves into battle

  12. Monkeys causing mayhem? Wolves might just be the unexpected solution

  13. Do it! Arm the ranchers with tranqs. $2k per pup, send em to japan.

  14. Do it! Makes total sense. Predators restore the balance.

Except of course for human predators….our minds are a dangerous thing

  15. All this headline tells me is next year I will be reading “Japan wants to reintroduce marauding monkeys with guns to tackle wolf damage.”

  16. There was a story going around in Okinawa while I was stationed there, not sure of its truthfulness, but supposedly rats arrived on US Navy ships during WWII. To contain the rats, they imported snakes called Habu’s. Then the snakes went wild and they imported Mongoose’s (?) to contain the snakes. You’d think they would’ve learned.

  17. What if we made a monkey safe suit and we turned fighting the monkeys into a sport instead? The wolves can come too.

  18. Pretty soon, Wolf Riding Monkeys terrorize nearby cities.

  19. Finally, Amaterasu, origin of all that is good and mother to us all, can reclaim her rightful place in Japan’s ecology.

Unfortunately she has a tendency to FEED the animals rather than eat them…

  20. I’d love for someone to answer this, but can’t monkeys climb up stuff, like trees and buildings? How will the wolves hunt them then? Also Japanese wolves went extinct.
