I’m a Marmite person. Vegemite is only ok – but not a substitute for Marmite
It has a strange, paste-like consistency. It’s not runny and sticky like marmite. And it has one of the weirdest, plasticy aftertastes that I’ve ever experienced. It is easier to spread than marmite though.
Sorry Aussie friends, I’ve tried to be objective, but marmite is still the daddy.
I can’t stand vegemite completely different texture and taste to marmite, i love marmite though
Because it’s Australian, you have to go higher pitched on the “mite”.
It’s called a Yeast Inflection
/coat
I like both. Marmite and Vegemite are great. Excellent toast based confectionery.
Needs to be slathered on kangaroo balls
I had an Australian drama teacher in high school.
He claimed that in high schools in Australia students would pull down the new kid’s pants and paint their bums with Vegemite. I never knew whether he was telling the truth or not.
It’s nice but not as strong as Marmite
No mention of Promite here, maybe another contender OP?
I prefer vegemite.
I know what I said.
I much prefer vegemite to marmite, but I’ll take either. But my mum’s a Kiwi so perhaps I’m biased.
It’s on a par with Aldi’s own brand “ marmshite “
Grew up on marmite but actually prefer Vegemite. Both have to be mixed with butter/marge to get the best taste though.
Yeah. Load of old bollox. I prefer Bovril anyway.
I’m not getting sucked into the debate. I will merely contribute that years back I had an Aussie mate who got a gigantic tub of Vegemite sent over by a well-wisher from back home. To make it even more Oz the container was shaped like sitting koala. However, that did mean when you were getting to the bottom of the jar you were literally scraping it out of a koala’s arse
I remember the first time I tried Vegemite, I was buying bread from a man in Brussels, he was six foot four and full of muscles, I said, “Do you speak-a my language?” He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich…
Bovril for the win!
But not if you in anyway avoid meat or meat products.
I wanted to like it, but I just couldn’t get past the taste…
Marmite is rank. Vegemite all day long
I imagine growing up with it you eventually just aquire the taste without knowing.
I tried Vegemite for the first time earlier this year. It kind of tasted like stale, rusty marmite. Not a great experience.
Would be curious to know what Aussies think of marmite.
Bovril is the superior spread thats why
It’s got a weird aftertaste, doesn’t it.
Didn’t they start off as the same company, then the original partners had a row and one left and made his own version called Vegemite. Can’t actually remember which was the original product though. I could google, but this is Reddit so I will half-remember a bit of something and put it out there as fact.
Marmite all the way for me anyway. It’s got way more tang.

Try Promite. It’s superior to vegemite.
