Not even Covid and Brexit can stop people getting green.
It’s literally one of the only things that has yet to see major price hikes too :p
Never gonna happen. They’ve shown that they aren’t interested in making shitloads of money from a perfectly logical solution because that would mean shifting their 1950s ReEfEr MaDnEsS conditioning. Don’t you know if you smoke pot you’ll murder your parents and throw yourself out of a window?
Not gonna happen, Tories aren’t behind the idea, Starmer rallied against defacto decriminalisation by Kahn in London.
Gonna be a cold day in hell before the weed is freed in the UK.
For those of us on the medical cannabis programme this is what we are waiting for. Currently, in a Tory esque way, the pharmacies charge through the nose for substandard weed, that takes longer to turn up than your average street dealer, quality is less as well. So now we’re fed up with it, and are starting to campaign to grow our own medicine, won’t ever happen under the tories, but we can at least try. This country is years behind others when it comes to cannabis legalisation
> Sensible policy?
Get out, we don’t do that kind of thing here.
covid really woulda been the perfect opportunity to legalise it… what better way to get through lockdowns :p
on a serious note though I find cannabis really helps improve my QoL in certain areas, I have very light usage (maybe 2-3x per month) and essentially only use it like you might take a paracetamol for a headache – I know when it’s gonna help so I only use it for that… I know this is just anecdotal evidence but legitimate research has been held back decades due to puritanical attitudes towards drugs, so anecdotes may have to do for now… so yep I’m all for legalisation because I believe it can be a genuine help
(I’d probably age limit it to at least 21 though, because there is some evidence of detrimental effects on developing brains)
Cannabis and TV are the only things that got me through the pandemic to be honest; I don’t even drink any more as a result.
It amazes me that the Tories haven’t seen legalisation as a ripe money-making opportunity yet, seeing as though that’s the only thing they’re interested in.
So long as the Mail has its way and the Tories are in power, the UK will be behind even Saudi Arabia in legalising it.
I suspect it’ll be a while. When I’ve been in the US and Canada, I’ve been surprised by how endemic weed is. A lot more middle class parents, professionals etc into it than in the UK. Plus those coultures have much less of a drinking culture in general.
I suspect the reason it’s been effectively legalised over there is just how overwhelmingly common it is, especially contrasted to their lack of pub/drinking culture compared to us.
My buddies in Toronto are both earning $100k+, got two kids, really not big drinkers at all but they have a few hemp plants at the bottom of the garden and enjoy a smoke with friends on a Friday night. I struggle to imagine that here, I think most people of that demographic would recoil at the thought of being “junkies” but would happily guzzle a couple of bottles of wine instead.
Frankly I think the UK is so deep into booze, and politicians (on all sides) are so removed from any sort of drug experience that it would be very difficult to get majority support.
Walk round most cities or towns you can smell it everywhere cops don’t do anything
A number of Tory MPs have a vested interest in keeping it illegal. They have shares in cannabis farms in the UK which export. Legalising it over here could result in competition which might jeopardise their bottom line
Would have solved the tax issue. Millions of people would be better off, NHS would be better off. Id happily pay tax on it, if i could buy top quality at the off license – you know with the far more worse stuff for you like Alcohol and Tabaco.
Imagine legalising cannabis and taxing it and pumping that tax back into the economy….great stuff.
Not sure why the Tories don’t want this. They can tax it and award contracts to their mates. It’s untapped corruption.
The UK is already the largest exporter of medicinal cannabis in Europe.
Why would the tories ever consider reform when it’s already lining their and their mates pockets?
the UK government grows most of the cannabis back in 2016 and who profits from it ? Same people who want it illegal.
Maybe stop voting for the same people and expecting a different result?
The Government loves money so legalise and tax it and then they can make loads, and no doubt swindle it into their own bank accounts. Seems ideal for a Tory government since they are motivated by nothing except greed.
The Tories will NEVER legalise weed. I’d bet my left bollock on that
Easy tax income….wonder if thr government would tax it so much it would be cheaper on the street though.
It’s almost like Philip May has a significant share in one if the world’s biggest medicinal cannabis manufacturers…
Country needs a boost of the coffers to fund social care, NHS and renewable energy drive. Legalise weed and get the tax windfall. There are places that could be up and running in weeks, CBD and vape shops would just clear a shelf.
A few regional police forces have already given up on it. Unless you’re taking the piss with a huge smelly grow.
From a police point of view stoners are far less trouble than drunks.
Give it another year or so and ‘campaigning’ will be illegal in the UK
I hear… (more research needed)
the main person that is blocking this, their partner is the UKs biggest distributor of medical MJ to the states and some use in UK.
So to keep it from being legal is a guarantee mega money for them both.
