I wonder what went wrong. Seems they don’t have an answer to that yet but it’s strange that someone (I assume the tractor driver) was arrested at the time
Damn, I feel bad for the tractor driver who called to ensure safety before crossing and then got crashed into at 80mph by the best and most efficient transportation there is. Only minor injuries to the people invovled and the tractor driver was unharmed which is a blessing and shows how safe trains are compared to personal vehicles.
Says he called, doesn’t say he got permission to proceed, or even an answer for that matter, so there’s still a lot that’s unknown.
I saw a video posted by another farmer a few days before this and he was saying to people when using the trackside phones to make sure they ask that the signaller actually check the line, because he’d had a couple of near misses with trains.
I notice that BTP arrested the tractor driver, without checking any evidence first, automatically assuming that he was at fault, when it was more likely the signaller failing to check that it was all clear.
I hate this microscopic analysis of the RAIB initial findings. This isn’t the final investigation. There should be a signal box voice recorder so they’ll know what happened and the RAIB will publish that in the final report.
A 32 year old man from Bromyard was arrested, may be the tractor driver, may be the signaller. That will all come out during the actual investigation.
