Taxi Driver here in Dublin, feel free to AMA about the industry or Dublin!

  1. Did you get to avail of the massive 20K government grant and get yourself one of the MG electric yokes that are all the rage right now?

  2. I’d say you hear some crazy stories. I know I’ve been guilty of talking absolute bollocks while drunk in the back. My question is: What is the strangest/weirdest conversation you’ve overheard? (Another driver once told me it goes in one ear and out the other)

Also, ever get passangers in the car that are clearly having an affair?

  3. Do those drivers who queue up outside Heuston actually make much money? Seems like every time I see them there’s not many people looking to get in and the lads at the back of the queue could be waiting for ages to get to the front. Maybe I just see them at non-busy times

  4. How do you judge whether or not the passenger wants a chat? Is it just sit in the passenger seat if they want a chat and sit in the back if not?

  5. During isolation, we’ve sometimes used a taxi to pickup something from a pharmacy or vet that they wouldn’t / couldn’t deliver (so the driver walks up, gets the item, and drops it outside the door for us).

I’ve always felt very uncomfortable doing this like I’m asking the taxi driver to do something weird or not really something I should be asking. Both drivers seemed fine with it – is this normal and something that happens more often than I imagine?

  6. Do you know why did it become so hard to find a taxi after a night out in the last couple months?

Getting a FreeNow on a weekend night takes a really long time. It wasn’t like this before lockdown. Are there less taxi drivers?

  7. What’s the standard rate when you first hop into a taxi…ya know when they start the meter off and what are the extras for if its 2 people no luggage?

Also what’s the deal with the ID thing on the dashboard…was in a taxi recently without one and your man went bout 70 in a 50 zone near grand canal and broke three lights that were actually red…strangest ride of my life

  8. Finding lately that taxi drivers are asking where I’m going before opening the doors. I thought this wasn’t allowed but has something changed?

  9. How difficult would it be for a young person to enter the industry? Is it very expensive to start out with insurance, taxi plates, a suitable car etc?

How did you get into it?

  10. I hope this isn’t too personal but what would your average annual income be (gross)? Or a range

  11. Coming here to say thanks for the work you do. I’ve never had a bad experience with a taxi in Dublin but then I try not to cause trouble for them. I strongly believe “treat others how you want to be treated” goes down well here.

Do you have any insight on why there is a shortage of drivers in the evening these days? Did they change careers due to COVID or are they refusing app fares due to increased charges?

  12. **Story:** I’m a polite rider and usually do my best to make the driver comfortable with a bit of small talk. One time, I got in a taxi with a sticker with a “no fucking” sign. I asked the driver if he’s actually had this happen to him. He told me a few times, including one time when a Thai ladyboy and two rough Russian looking dudes hailed him at 2am.

As he was driving, he heard muffling sounds, looked back, and saw the girl squeezed in the back seat sucking down one of the guys while the other guy was jerking off. He tried to ignore it and just keep driving, but then when he looked back again, she was hovering over the other guy with her panties around her waist and her skirt pulled up. He told them to get out. They shoved a bunch of money at him and told him to keep driving, but he told them to get the fuck out. They threatened to kill him if he wouldn’t keep going. He pulled over immediately on the tollway, opened the door, and literally threw them out, including the girl with her panties still around her waist.

**Question:** Any wild encounter similar to that in Dublin?

  13. Do drivers actually *have* to take card? It’s something I’ve never understood.

And if they do, what exactly do you say to a driver who’s “machine is broken” and all you have is card?

  14. How do you feel about Uber?

my opinion, shouldn’t Uber help the more remote areas of Ireland, help save the local pub? Taxis are good and all my old man was a taxi driver in Dublin, he loved that job.

Freenow is okay but it’s basically a taxi dispatcher. Doesn’t really solve the problem of few taxis in remote areas and taxis are really expensive when you do find one

  15. As a young enough chap 28 who will be getting his plates off his father when he retires, is it worth going full time?

  16. How do you feel about the move for bus lanes to exclude taxis? Or at the very least taxis without a fare.

    The argument is that
    a) taxis are essemtially private vehicles that passengers rent rather than public transport
    b) Doing this would free up the bus lanes and massively improve the reliability/predictability of the bus services.

  17. How much do you make per week? I’m a nurse living in Dublin as well and just bought a ioniq 5, thinking of quitting cause I’m just burned the fucked out.

  18. Why in the airport is the opposite from the rest of world? Everywhere I travel to there are hundreds of taxis queuing to get people and only in Ireland there are hundreds of people waiting for taxis?

  19. No question for ya. Me Dad was a taxi driver and I know loads of taxi drivers. I just wanna say thanks for accepting a lot of people in your vehicle and for bein super cool.

  20. Why do taxis drivers hate taking card? Modern card readers can run off a SIM or hotspot, and the fees these days are minimal. Also, it seems that this kind of attitude is more common than those who would accept it.

I fear telling a taxi driver that I want to pay with card which is such B/S in todays society. If I have a choice, and have cash, I will ask at a rank who takes card, get in the cab who takes card, and then pay them with cash.
