King Charles reportedly used to love rummaging around in Windsor’s royal library as a younger man before making a surprise discovery which did not get the reaction he expected

King Charles apparently made an exciting discovery in Windsor Castle, one which left fellow members of the Royal Family absolutely baffled. According to a new documentary, as a younger person, the monarch loved sorting through the library to find out its secrets.

Speaking to the documentarians, author Mark Lane said: “Charles used to love rummaging through the library.”

However, on one particular occasion, Charles found something special. Royal commentator Ingrid Seward said: “He discovered a cache of Leonardo Da Vinci drawings in the royal library and he was so excited.”

According to royal journalist Emily Andrews, Charles was so enamoured with the iconic drawings that he showed them to the rest of his family, but didn’t get the response he expected.

She explained: “He apparently absolutely loved them and then went back to go and tell his family what he’d found and he was met with bafflement and bemusement.”

The insight into Charles’ relationship with Windsor Castle comes ahead of an important reception at the property later this month.

On June 12, the King will be accompanied by five other royals including the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and the Princess Royal. However, Queen Camilla is not on the list, but a reason has not been given for this, reports the Daily Express.

At said event, 197 British businesses are due to be recognised for their achievements across four categories as part of The King’s Award for Enterprise.

Meanwhile, it isn’t just Windsor Castle which is seeing a visit by the King, but Balmoral Castle too as plans were announced to open it to the public following a successful trial run in 2024.

A statement on the official Balmoral Castle Instagram read: “Following the historic opening of the castle’s doors in the summer of 2024 — for the first time since its completion in 1855 — we are once again delighted to offer exclusive private tours, guided by our experienced team.

“Journey through history, from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s purchase of the Balmoral Estate to the present day.

“You’ll have the rare opportunity to view a selection of rooms within the Castle that are still used by Their Majesties The King and Queen, as well as other members of the Royal Family.”

King Charles is the first monarch in the modern era to have opened Balmoral to the public with the late-Queen Elizabeth II keeping it as a private venue instead.
