Kate and William attended the same university, and when the two met, Kate ended up running away red-faced.

According to Christopher Anderson, a royal biographer, this was due to a rather embarrassing moment on Kate’s part, reports Daily Express UK.

In his book William and Kate: A Royal Love Story, Anderson details how the couple met at a party in St Andrews University’s halls.

Kate reportedly curtsied upon meeting her future husband, only for William to accidentally spill a drink all over himself, prompting Kate to hastily end their encounter.

During their 2010 engagement interview, Kate recounted: “I actually went bright red when I met you and scuttled off feeling very shy about meeting you.”

She continued: “William wasn’t there for quite a bit of the time initially, he wasn’t there from Fresher’s Week, so it did take a bit of time for us to get to know each other, but we did become very close friends from quite early on.”

William, chuckling at Kate’s story, admitted that he didn’t recall their first meeting and had to “wrack his brain” to remember it.

Putting the awkward incident behind them, the couple started dating, and their romance lasted four years before they decided to go their separate ways in 2006/2007.

In a 2010 interview with ABC, William attributed the breakup to being young.

He said: “It was at university, we were sort of both finding ourselves as such and being different characters and stuff, it was very much trying to find our own way and we were growing up, and so it was just sort of a bit of space and a bit of things like that and it worked out for the better.”

Kate also reflected on the split during their official engagement interview, that at the time, she wasn’t very happy about the break, but in the long-run, and looking back, it was nice to have time to herself, which she discussed in their engagement interview.

She added: “You find out things about yourself that maybe you hadn’t realised. Or I think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you are younger.”

“I really valued that time for me as well although I didn’t think it at the time. Looking back on it.”

Their friendly breakup was short-lived, as the couple soon reunited, and William eventually proposed to Kate in Kenya on October 20, 2010.
