Friendship my ass, he was just propping up a weakened monarch to keep the West unstable and legitimize his own independence. A few years later Henry the Fowler used civil war in the West to completely invade and annex *Lothringia*. He’s for all intents and purposes the founder of Germany, and his son the founder of the HRE.
