LGBT conference cancelled after organisations pull their support over conversion therapy row

  1. For reference, the shared statement from [LGBT Consortium](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Consortium_of_LGBT_Voluntary_and_Community_Organisations_UK) and signees is as follows:

    >LGBT+ Consortium, as the umbrella body for LGBT+ Voluntary and Community Organisations across the UK, along with organisations across the Ban Conversion Therapy Alliance, wholeheartedly backs Stonewall’s decision to withdraw all support for this Summer’s UK Government-led Safe To Be Me conference. The UK Government’s plans to scrap legislation outlawing conversion practices were abhorrent. What made the situation worse was a quick U-turn that actively excluded our trans siblings, and we refuse to stand by and let this happen. Trans rights are human rights and we stand shoulder to shoulder with every trans organisation and every trans person on this matter. The UK Government’s own data shows that Trans people are more likely to be subjected to so-called conversion therapy, with data showing even higher risk for Black Trans people. A ban that excludes Trans people is unacceptable and we as an LGBT+ sector must have our voices heard on this matter and stand as one in solidarity.

The link has an updated list of organisations that signed.

  2. Unsurprising but still kind of enraging. They’d rather cancel this than actually deliver the CT ban they said they would

  3. The government will look into banning conversion therapy for trans people, which is ultimately great, however it is not being done because they agree they have done something wrong. It is an attempt to appear progressive, despite being firmly against what they see as ‘woke’ culture. LGBT groups should continue to engage with the government, however they must not forget that the Tories are not really their allies. They just enjoy the good PR it brings them in the run-up to elections.
