A coin expert has issued their advice over an “extremely rare” 50p coin being sold on eBay for nearly £80,000.

The King Charles III 2022 50p features four shields representing each country which makes up the UK, with the crown positioned in the middle.

On the flip side of the coin is an image of the King, with the eBay seller determining its worth at exactly £75,086.72.

The seller’s description read: “First and foremost, 50% of the winning bid goes to charity, so please bid generously.

“This is an extremely rare 50p coin featuring King Charles III, minted in 2022. As a collector’s item, this coin is a must-have for any serious coin enthusiast.

“Its unique design and limited availability make it a valuable addition to any collection.”

Coins similar to this feature heavily on the online marketplace, with TikToker, Coincollectorukofficial, investigating one of the 2022 edition coins.

The coin specialist revealed the coin had a mintage of 4.9 million, and followed this up with some information which will be disappointing for many.

He said the coin is unfortunately only worth 50p, for those looking to make a small fortune on a coin lying about at home.

One commenter said they had a misaligned print on their coin, hoping it would be worth more than the allocated 50p.

A mistake in the minting or some sort of variation in the coin can also help to determine a coin’s rarity, as well as market demand, grade and quality.

The experts added: “Valuable coins are not necessarily scarce coins, but rarity will always add to the value of a coin.

“Precious metal bullion coins, such as gold Sovereigns, have an initial high price because of their metal content.
