UK: The Tories’ big idea for staying in power? Endless conflict with the EU

  1. In his dying words, Shakespeare’s Henry IV tells his son, the future Henry V, that he must divert the attention of the barons before they threaten his rule. “Therefore, my Harry, be it thy course to busy giddy minds with foreign quarrels.”

Like Plantagenet warlords, Conservative leaders need foreign quarrels lest the voters realise they have presided over the stagnation of British life. Real wages in 2024 will be just 2.4% higher than 2008, compared with a 36% rise in the 16 years before the financial crisis. We are a sluggish, depressed and declining country, where hard work brings few rewards and most people cannot get on, however strenuously they try. If the UK were a person, it would be a punch-drunk boxer, staggering round the ring.

  2. The big idea is to let Starmer as long as possible labour leader, because thats a guaranteedvwin for BoJo.

  3. Politico reported in one of their summaries that the UK government rubber-stamped license for everyone, but singled out the French in particular for refusal.

Sounds like the divide-and-conquer they’ve been trying since Brexit.

  4. unfortunately its a good plan, probably garuntees them 30%+ of the vote, and you dont need much more on top of that to win

  5. Thing is, being outside the EU provides endless opportunity for squabbles.
Outside of rule based blocks, realpolitik is king.

However, there’s a natural gravitation between EU and UK, everyone can see that it’s sensible to have trade deal and cooperate with your closest neighbors. It’s profitable for both sides. They are bound to collaborate more and more, sign more and more agreements, until they might as well Brejoin.

Brexit is just a shitfest, a giant waste of energy.

All this at a time when Europe really needs to get it’s shit together in the face of external influence from US, China and Russia, as well as global threats like climate change.

  6. Populism 101: Find a scapegoat and beat that dead horse until it’s even more dead, then beat it some more. See: LGBT and women’s rights in Poland.

  7. The Tories would stay in power regardless. The one thing Brits hate more than the EU is far left communists, which is the alternative to the Tories. Awful headline.

  8. Nah the Tories big idea for staying in power is just doing nothing. Labor leaders surrender to woke politics will keep them there forever. As long as labor politicians are claiming “it’s not right to say that only women have cervix” they will be loosing.

  9. I mean if a hard brexit actually occurs what more conflict is there going to be? Each party goes their own way and if the door closes the UK cannot get in the EU’s buisness and vice versa. Not a great long term plan, but i guess that never was a torie strong point.

  10. Mostly because the EU allows it. Hard Brexit best Brexit, anyone with an inch of braincells would understand that the UK will drag this on forever. Unfortunately there’s too many people in power in the EU who would lose money if that happened.
