UK to ban gambling ads featuring sports and reality TV stars

  1. bit of a pay-cut for Alan Shearer and Germaine Jennas then.
Saying that, I suppose their advert portrays gambling as something to treat as a social activity for fun, not a way of gaining money or being successful in itself.

  2. A bit of a legal quagmire that looks like.

Better to outlaw gambling altogether like they have outlawed cigarette advertising.

  3. Also ban the begging ads every 5mins featuring celebs. Sorry but they annoy me, ontop of your living crisis in your own country, don’t forget to sponsor a donkey in Timbuktu, adopt an orangutan, sponsor a tiger, water aid, under age marriage, this that and the fkin other..

  4. Classic UK government watering down of good ideas.

I’m reminded of Billy Connolly’s bit about how the government talked about whether to kill or cut the bollocks off all the vicious attack dogs that had caused a spate of baby deaths and we ended up with them having to register them at the Post Office.

  5. The amount of gambling ads is insane. The last time I used a bookmakers was probably around November. Haven’t even been to a site since then, and still get served quite a few on YouTube.

Constant ads of people hanging out in groups having a great time – and hilariously often doing something else entirely that isn’t betting. Group of friends at a bar playing table football, and that’s somehow trying to say you’ll have an amazing time gambling? Or that it’s some kind of group activity?

If I never hear ‘acca’ again it’ll be too soon.

  6. Ban all gambling ads, including sponsorship of teams by gambling companies. F1 scrapped tobacco advertising (eventually) and it has survived, we can scrap gambling advertising and the sports and (sadly) the gambling industry will both survive unharmed.

  7. Finally we’re going to see an influx of non-celebrities on tv……..except this time they’ll be telling us they are not famous.

  8. Now force advertising companies to allow people to opt out of gambling adverts. I get so many for sky casino on YouTube. If I had an addiction it would be overwhelming.

  9. The worst ones are those bingo ads on ch5 in the morning between the funeral insurance and over 50’s life insurance!

  10. I’d go with no gambling ads on TV.

Every single one of them these days just seems to be “look it’s not our fault if you get addicted”

Its like the “just say no” drugs campaigns.

  11. Really can they not just ban them already

I don’t gamble and see no end of them.. its either the sports related betting stuff or video/mobile phone games featuring micro transactions (which is practically all of them these days)

Ripping off poor people while the wealthy use it as a laundering pit

  12. “we care about our fans who are struggling financially, so i’ll tell them the best odds and who can provide them”….

  13. I Have known at least five people who have destroyed their lives through online gambling (divorce, lost house, massive debt). Know at least another five who have a serious problem that’s starting to get out of hand. Most of them comfortable middle class people who weren’t gambling out of desperation. By contrast I have known 2 alcoholics, one serious enough to drink himself to death by 25 and no hard drug addicts.

Just anecdotal but I bet the damage from gambling is worse than any other similar affliction. The online industry needs to be banned or at least very heavily regulated.

  14. Such a wet flannel response.

Gambling advertising should be stopped, full stop.

Like they did with tobacco advertising.

  15. I can’t wait for the first judgment to determine whether or not someone is too obscure for this rule to apply.

  16. If they banned gambling ads and sponsorship, then football clubs and players would struggle financially… I’m fine with that

  17. I can’t wait to never have to hear that fucking Harry Rednap and Michael Owen shitty radio advert again. I instantly rip my earbuds out the second I hear that one.

Gambling adverts are toxic for humanity just like tobacco adverts used to be, no good can ever come of them. I’m guessing the only reason gambling adverts aren’t yet banned in the UK is because a handful of Tory MPs are in the pockets of gambling company bosses.

  18. Sorry Ray

Also doesn’t help the only thing left on the high street is bookies every 10ft…

  19. Why not ban all gambling adverts including bingo, poker and the like, its frankly disgusting that it is allowed at all, especially during times when children are watching tv. These ads always make gambling look like a happy and fun thing to do and the reality is so far away from that.
