LA protests live: Trump demands ‘bring in the troops’ after dozens arrested and reports of looting

Much the same goes for the peaceful protests by residents in the area who objected to what they saw as the extra-legal – as well as immoral and inhumane – actions and tactics by sometimes masked ICE officers.

It has to be said that the chief of ICE, Tom Homan – not a man readily familiar with the doctrine of “policing by consent” – was specifically chosen by Donald Trump for the job because of his casual disdain for the law and constitutional niceties. It should be no great surprise that those working for him took their hard-line cue from Mr Homan and, indeed, the President himself.

CNN’s Brian Stelter reports that television personality Dr. Phil McGraw was embedded with federal agents as they carried out immigration raids on Friday.

The footage is being incorporated into a special report on “Dr. Phil Primetime,” a program on McGraw’s conservative TV channel Merit TV, a spokesperson confirmed to CNN.

McGraw’s presence on the ground in L.A. reinforces the made-for-TV nature of Trump’s immigration crackdown.

The TV psychologist was also embedded with ICE officials back in January when raids were carried out in Chicago.

McGraw also chatted with Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, and taped an interview with him, according to his channel.

Twitch streamer Hasan Piker was stunned by a flashbang shot by LAPD at an anti-ICE protest on Sunday, one that appears to be on a freeway.

Another protester found the aerial burst shell nearby.

Piker spoke with The Independent in May, shortly before his own encounter with U.S. border officials.

He told Madeline Sherratt about his frustrations with the Trump administration and weak attempts by Democrats to hold the president accountable.

Late on Sunday night, the LAPD tweeted that there were reports of looting at 6th Street and Broadway in downtown Los Angeles.

A video clip from Kick user @billyjohn appears to show a sneaker store getting looted.

In a further tweet, the LAPD said: “All DTLA businesses or residents are requested to report any vandalism, damage or looting to LAPD Central Division so that it can be documented by an official police report. Please photograph all vandalism and damage prior to clean up.”

Arizona Democratic Senator Ruben Gallego reminds protestors, “Just because Donald Trump wants to inflame tensions doesn’t mean you have to play along.”

He adds: “Don’t loot, don’t assault police officers, protest peacefully. Trump and Miller will do this in every Blue city whenever they want to distract from something unpopular, like their Medicaid cuts.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt claims the unrest in Los Angeles proves “that we desperately need more immigration enforcement personnel and resources,” tying the violence to the administration’s goal of passing the “Big, Beautiful Bill.”

After taking a swipe at former President Joe Biden, Leavitt says the legislation “funds at least one million annual removals and hires 10,000 new ICE personnel, 5,000 new customs officers, and 3,000 new Border Patrol agents.”

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Monday that she did not agree with violent acts committed during the massive protests that have broken out in Los Angeles against immigration raids.

Sheinbaum, speaking at her morning press conference, also called on U.S. authorities to respect the rule of law in migration processes.

Mexico’s foreign minister, Juan Ramon De La Fuente, says at least 42 Mexicans are being held in four detention centers after recent immigration in Los Angeles. Four have been deported.
