TLDR:
* King Charles will once again ride in a carriage rather than on horseback at [Trooping the Colour](https://people.com/tag/trooping-the-colour/) in a carriage. this year, PEOPLE confirms.
* The annual event, also known as the King’s Birthday Parade, will take place in London on Saturday, June 14. It marks the second year in a row the monarch, 76, will review the troops from a carriage alongside Queen Camilla, 77, instead of riding horseback as he did during his first Trooping as sovereign in 2023. Despite riding horses privately until well into her nineties, Queen Elizabeth switched from taking part in the event on horseback to riding in a coach in 1987 when she was 60.
* The King is undergoing regular treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer, following his [diagnosis last year](https://people.com/king-charles-has-cancer-following-treatment-enlarged-prostate-8558946) following a scheduled procedure to treat an enlarged prostate. He was [hospitalized in March](https://people.com/king-charles-76-briefly-hospitalized-cancels-engagements-due-to-side-effects-of-cancer-treatment-11704752) after an adverse reaction to the side effects of his treatment. The palace said in a statement at the time that “following scheduled and ongoing medical treatment for cancer, King experienced temporary side effects that required a short period of observation in hospital.”
The King is an elderly man. His age alone is reason enough. Other European monarchs are tending to abdicate before they reach his age, so I don’t blame him.
The late queen last rode horseback during Trooping the Colour in 1986, when she was 60.
