A “high seas treaty” enabling new protections for the two thirds of ocean beyond national limits should come into force next year, amid warnings from Sir David Attenborough and Prince William about the threat from overfishing and climate change.
The treaty will for the first time allow for the creation of marine parks in international waters. Experts deem it vital for safeguarding fish, whales and other marine life. The treaty was agreed two years ago but stalled after only 32 nations ratified it
I just watched that Our Oceans doc on Netflix over the weekend and he was very adamant about this in the doc. I knew we were over fishing, but it really got put into perspective during the series. I highly recommend to those that have not watched.
Australia is on board
