Special forces were among those who rushed to BORG Dreierschützengasse high school in Graz, Austria after a call at 10am local time (9am BST).
At 11.30am (10.30am BST), police posted on X that the school had been evacuated and everyone had been taken to a safe meeting point.
They wrote that the situation was “secured” and there was no longer believed to be any danger.
Eight children and one adult have died. The gunman is understood to have shot himself.
The number of injured is believed to be about 30.
The gunman is reported by local media to have been a 22-year-old man.
The emergency services descended on the scene, with police and other emergency vehicles seen in the area around the school.
At least one police helicopter was seen flying over the area.
