though their time at the top was relatively short Sly and the Family Stone helped to define an era influencing some of the biggest names in music from Miles Davis to Michael Jackson to Prince and the Beasty Boys known for experimenting with R&B soul and gospel music the front man was a charismatic and dynamic showman famous for his eclectic style and hypnotic performances and this is a huge loss that I’m just now hearing about because he has been a musical influence for so many of us that come from that era of music and uh wow wow what a great loss raised in the Bay Area California Sly was musical from a young age and DJed before forming the band in 1966 sly and the Family Stone became the first major act to feature black and white members going on to perform at eradfining music festival Woodstock the group had their first breakout hit in 1967 with Dance to the Music the first of three number one hits which included Everyday People everyday People Family Affair was to be their final number one hit in 1971 [Music] blood the group fell from the limelight finally breaking up in 1983 a decade later Sly was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but also struggled with drug addiction and financial difficulties quest Love who released a documentary this year about the singer’s life paid tribute to the artist in a moving Instagram post saying “Sly was a giant not just for his groundbreaking work with the Family Stone but for his radical inclusivity and deep human truth he poured into every note his songs weren’t just about fighting injustice they were about transforming the self to transform the world [Music]

Sly Stone, the revolutionary musician and dynamic showman whose Sly and the Family Stone transformed popular music in the 1960s and ’70s and beyond with such hits as “Everyday People,” “Stand!” and “Family Affair,” died Monday at age 82.
