1. ‘Deep fear’ is right. Putin is afraid of everything and should be. Sometimes his own ass scares him at night.

2. Of course China is their true enemy.

   NATO and the EU will never choose to be the aggressor. The only reason they would proactively intervene is to secure nuclear weapons if Putin had lost control. They have no other agenda.

   Unlike China.

3. This is why one separates rhetoric from core values when analysing. Same applies to China, the US, Turkiye, Hungary, and so forth.

   Endless friendship is endless cynicism – always was, always will be.

4. I mean no matter how much russia prevails in this they’ll be under China economically and even militarily. China is using Russia as a belligerent to accomplish their anti-west/nato foreign policy goals while looking more put together. Russia is being played and China can just drop them whenever.

    China is a totalitarian state with censorship, child labor, and repression of their people.

11. The thing is that Russia has no friends of reliable allies.

    It only has enemies and current allies of convenience (and Belarus).

    It is not like Iran or North Korea share some deep ideological goals with Russia or they have much in common culturally or religiously or even ethnically. They just have common aims and enemies.

    China has some common aims with Russia, but not too many.

    They want a multi polar world where there isn’t just one super power and they want a world where using the military to clear up territorial disputes is something you can do successfully and without too many outsiders complaining.

    However China also wants a world stable enough for their economy to keep growing and their citizens to be happy and content and unlikely to overthrow them.

    In the long term Russia is losing military might and is currently in control of all sorts of places north of China that may hold resources China might want for itself. Like large lakes full of fresh water.

    So this is not a deep and abiding friendship, but it is also not going to be the Sino-Soviet Split 2.0 any time soon.

12. I bet this isn’t true and they purposely leaked it in order to slow down the current NATO mega build. If the world thinks Russia isn’t super close to China and actually worried about them, NATO countries lose the support of citizens for increased defense budgets. Without China, it’s kind of game over for Russia. So they’ll never jeopardize that friendship.

    The ONLY play where Russia is scared of China is in the event of a direct conflict with NATO. Because NATO would essentially wipe the floor with Russia, and China could come in and reclaim all their former land + more while they are weak.

13. The usual Russian tactic of weakening nations by sowing discontent and divisions via social media, propping up far right organizations etc etc is not going to work with China and that drives the Russians nuts

    1. They get to buy cheap natural resources from Russia, at below market rate.
    2. They get to sell stuff to both sides, Russia and west.
    3. Possibility Russia collapses and splits up in the future, possibly in the chaos China can secure Siberia, eastern parts under its control and that area has tons of natural resources. Siberia already has vastly more chinese there then russians.

18. Russia has put herself in such a shit position in terms of what’s going to happen over the next 20-50 years.

    If they had actually tried becoming friendly and on good terms with the EU they would have had a natural ally in whatever confrontation happens with China, whether it’s purely economic or not. And I mean, say what you want about Russia but if they weren’t so hellbent on violating human rights and engaging in war crimes, they could have worked toward further economic partnerships with the rest of Europe, not to mention political and other agreements as well. It would have made Russia richer and stronger, standing side by side with European partners who have a to some degree shared history and culture.

    Instead Russia now has enemies all around, a shrinking economy, and shitty prospects for the future. Meanwhile China has been growing, becoming stronger, and more capable. If there’s some sort of conflict between the two in the future, Russia is going to be SOL.

    Russia’s strategy to attempt to divide the west using misinformation and replace liberal and left-leaning institutions with more right-leaning ones isn’t going to give them the allies they’ll need, even if they are successful to some degree. They are stubborn though and will continue on this “our way or the high way” path going forward, and it’s going to lead to their downfall.

    China would be among the most benefited if Russia were to collapse.

    They could end up absorbing the asiatic regions of Russia.

    Nothing new here… all that prevented this for half a century are nukes, because China could easily out-produce Russia and has far more meat for a meat-grinding war.

22. Well, the reason for the current “partnership” between Russia and China are the “common values” of xenophobia and intended dominance. Needless to say that this will not be a stable and happy marriage.
    As it stands now Russia will be economically vassalized within the next decade by China. Maybe China won’t take control of Russia’s Siberian assets directly but if Russia keep on their current path than they will drift into the Chinese economic orbit by simple weight of power and wealth.

    If it wasn’t for a legendary Russian stupidity I’d think that this whole war with Ukraine was deep chinese operation and long game.

26. What would it take for Trump to realize he was doing the right thing by giving Russia an American helping hand? To stop Russia and China from getting closer. The right thing to do is to fake a leak of “very secret Russian documents” to the press, calling China an enemy.
