Portugal coach Roberto Martínez thinks João Palhinha can still make an impact at Bayern Munich.
“João has had a difficult year personally. I’ve spoken a lot with Vincent Kompany, and we both agree — that João never gave up despite the difficulties,” Martínez told Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “He was and is always there to help. He’s a player you can always trust — in any role and at any time… João Palhinha is one of those players you see very little but who has a total impact on his team.
“He can defend very close to the center of defense, but also has the ability to play good short and long balls. He can open up the game very well… He is an essential player for our national team — regardless of whether he plays many or few minutes.”
While Martínez seems to pushing hard for Palhinha to get more time on the club scene, why not throw him more minutes for Portugal?
“The competition in Portugal’s midfield is extremely fierce. I hope for the best from João Palhinha next season, once he’s had a good preseason and a good Club World Cup,” said Martínez.
As the coach said, it is easier said than done.
