Self-driving Uber ‘robotaxis’ set to launch in UK – and they will be driverless

1. I did start to worry about the jobs lost, but then realised I’d much rather my wife get in one of these self driving taxis than one with a rapey driver…

2. Remember when all the Taxi drivers around the country got annoyed at Uber taking all their passengers at cheaper rates. Now it’s the Uber drivers turn to get annoyed at their own company putting them all out of work.

   Will they be cheaper as there’s no driver to pay?

   What happens if someone pukes everywhere as they leave?

10. Goodbye taxi drivers. Uber will be in a position to undercut every taxi as it won’t have driver costs and when all the other companies go under, raise them back up.

12. fine, i’ll use them. So long as i get where i need to be, the human element isnt my concern.

13. How are these gonna deal with difficult road conditions, eg. react to people waving them out of a junction? Would only work well on perfect roads

14. I find it hard to believe that unemployed cabbies won’t be setting these things on fire

15. So many people in denial about the capabilities of AI. They won’t believe it, until its their job that is on the heap. The next 5-10 years is going to be nuts and so many people don’t seem to understand what’s about to hit.

16. I think people here underestimate the number of trips done by black cabs, taxi’s, Uber etc in London on a daily basis. These self driving trips are going to be a very small percentage of Londons total rides – mostly to get data etc.

19. As someone who drives every day in central London I’d be interested to see how they cope with small roads, traffic calming, suicidal cyclists, insane delivery riders on e-bikes and mopeds, phone zombie pedestrians and all the many other hazards they’ll encounter every few metres.

21. Can’t wait to watch the new show RoboTaxi punters on camera. There’ll be some riding and other shenanigans in the back of those.

23. I would use them all the time if they put little robot people in the front like in total recall.

24. Honestly can’t wait for self driving cars to be the norm/perfected.

    Driving sucks, people get outrageous road rage that they hold onto later & human error is the cause of so many deaths every year.

    Like i spend 2 hours every day driving to and from work where if self driving was the norm, i could relax during my transport
