  1. Good, Extremist content is spreading rapidly, and neither children nor even adults could withstand that much disinformation and eventually they would believe that it’s true

  2. I can already see this being a “Great idea, poor execution” situation.

  3. That’s a good thought, I agree that children should have very limited access to the internet, but if there is a way for them to get on social media, they will, despite what the law says. This inherently means that online ID verification for social media is coming. The internet is getting stricter, and this could snowball.

  4. This will stop them, just like no kid has ever found porn online.

  5. Why not just ban the whole internet at this point. It is the most surefire way to ‘save the children’.

  6. Banning it for kids doesn’t get to the root of the problem, it just a ban on people communicating with each other. They should be regulating how the algorithms are allowed to function which is what drives misinformation and pushing people into content bubbles.

  7. In one sense – good, unregulated social media is terrible. In another, is banning something really the best way to go about it? I think there are many other ways where you can restrict it.

  8. that’s great! more hackers! and more normal people!

  9. Wait and see, first he said that he will try to convince Eu.

  10. I think most governments should be doing
Something like this. Social media started great but it’s turned into something that’s disgusting. I remember seeing experts warm us around 20 years ago that it could be used poorly and they are right

  11. I thought it was already banned for under 18s? That’s how it should be

  12. I’m not pro-censorship but I think this is probably the correct decision for brain development reasons. Social media is the microplastics of the mind.

  13. I just hope that they’ll be agile enough to follow up on it. Cause I see how some some EU Member States are not catching up with banning designer drugs due to the variety of substances.

  14. I think it should be banned for every day except Sunday after 6 pm to 11 pm

  15. I remember a day before social media. I can’t tell you what I would be doing right now without it. But I hope and I think I would be happier and healthier.

  16. Yeah, Macron say a lot of things man. Almost 10 years and haven’t done 10% of his promises. Will be a relieve when he will finish his mandate.

  17. Kids shouldn’t have to participate in the digital world until they have some understanding of themselves. Even when they’re allowed it should be different for them than anyone else, no reason a high school kid to be able to pick up the same algorithms and content of an adult. Putting age restrictions on movies, t.v and radio is dumb if the kids are getting even worse through their phones.

  18. How about attacking the problem of tracking people and invading their privacy by collecting every tiny bit of information you can about them and turning it back around on them? How about restricting companies from spying on people?

Social media loses all power if it has no idea who you are. And it shouldn’t know any more than is explicitly given it by the user. As is, banning social media doesn’t ban you being tracked and turned into a digital commodity to exploit and manipulate.

  19. The problem with this is defining what “social media” is. It’s actually quite a vague term that breaks down if you try to define it precisely (which is necessary if you aim to pass a law like this). Is it any site/app where users can communicate with each other? Wikipedia editors can do this on an article’s Talk page, so does this mean Wikipedia is social media? Is Youtube social media? Again, users can chat to each other, but it’s not the main goal of the site.

Is it any site where users can upload content? Again, Wikipedia and Youtube would both fall under this definition and therefore have to be banned for under-15s.

Is a traditional Web 1.0 Forum social media? Or IRC? I know it’s not the intent of Macron here to regulate these things. He’s obviously talking about the obvious candidates – Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and so on. But I don’t know how any law of this nature could be worded in such a way to only apply to what everyone thinks of as social media and not just large, sweeping swarthes of the Internet.

  20. How is working out for Texas? Do we know anything yet?

  21. Well I’m glad they are focused on high priority items such as this.

  22. we live in a society where i find myself thinking “damn i wish they banned it for me too”

  23. I look forward to seeing what their enforcement mechanism looks like

  24. Step 2, implement digital ID and force people to use it
