The US power group Duke Energy plans to build a new gas-fired power plant of about 1.4 GW in the US state of South Carolina. The company aims to apply to the Public Service Commission of South Carolina (PSCSC) for approval to build a new gas-fired power plant in Anderson County later in 2025, once it receives feedback from residents, property owners and businesses near the proposed project. If approved, Duke Energy expects to start construction works by 2027, to start commercial operations by early 2031.
The project is consistent with Duke Energy’s near-term actions approved in the company’s Carolinas Resource Plan in 2024. The company’s electric utilities serve 8.6 million customers and collectively owns over 55 GW of energy capacity across the United States. Duke Energy is investing in major electric grid upgrades and cleaner generation, including natural gas, nuclear, renewables and energy storage.
