I’ll never understand Online Ireland’s obsession with gatekeeping Irishness. Like if someone insists that they’re Irish based on a single ancestor back in 1680 that’s one thing, especially if they try to impose politics on Ireland.
But if someone is born abroad to Irish parents and considers themselves Irish, I’d still see them as Irish, especially as their home life would be heavily influenced by Ireland.
Likewise, I’ve seen lads post on here saying variations of “Hi I’m Irish American and interested in learning more about my ancestors culture. What’s some good books to read” only to be met by “NOOOO YOU’RE AMERICAN. NOT IRISH AMERICAN”. Like even when an American says they’re Irish, it’s shorthand for Irish American rather than them saying they’re literally from Ireland and not the US
**Edit** Ah lads. It’s bizarre seeing Irish people on social media having meltdowns because someone born in the US or Australia to Irish parents still considers themselves Irish.
I’ll leave you to it. Have fun.

In fairness: the head on him. There’d be no denying him, like.
😂
Its so blatantly childish too
Like they’re still teenagers scared the other boys will make fun of them for saying anything remotely positive about something “uncool”
I hate when clowns gatekeep being Irish, it’s ridiculous.
A Nation held its breath for David O’Leary. Philo was the boy back in town. Half of U2. Poxy Brits the lot of them, wha’?
Sure if he paid his taxes in Ireland, he can be as Irish as he wants.
I don’t like his personality. He can identify as whatever he wants though
I think the Americans have ruined it for everyone, and now some people are scared to let anyone (even people like Ed who by any measure *are* irish) claim their irishness

Honestly I don’t my mind ed, sure he probably has some links and doesn’t some time here and may understand what Irish culture actually is but not everyone does. Having a passport or a parent or grandparent or even born here does not make you Irish.
Understanding and partaking on modern Irish culture is.
It’s hard to keep up with this sub. Sometimes everyone seethes when a claim of Irishness is made and other times it’s how dare you question it.
Ed is more Irish than McIlroy
Ireland, I mean no offense but you do remember why people fled. Horrible things.
I strongly believe that severe nationalism is equal to severe idiocy… And it is same in every nations.
I’m Russian, and was living there until 27ish. Now 12 years abroad and if I go back I’m not really Russian anymore))
So it’s not really an Irish thing. It’s any nation with strong nationalism traits.
Ireland’s nationalism has strong foundation in a sense of UK role in its history and religion as well.
So it is always to be expected given our human nature, of alertness to anything foreign and unusual
Gate keeping irishness is one of the cringiest things in the world.
I’m very proud when people of Irish heritage are so proud of their irishness that they identify themselves as Irish over their other nationalities.
To any of the gatekeepers:
Who da fuq made you king of Ireland you insular* prick?
*this is of course a reference to the fact that Irish is part of the Insular Gaelic language family…
He could play for Ireland. If he was a top class striker banging in goals left right and Center, you wouldn’t hear any whinging or gatekeeping. His Granny lived close to me and I’ve met him a few times. I’d happily swap mcrapey for Sheeran.
Did people not know he’s Irish?
The amount of butthurt yanks in the comments crying about gate keeping being Irish, the problem is when someone hears your accent and you get a speal about their moms aunts sisters cousins dog who’s dad was from county limerick and how that makes them more Irish than you.
It’s not cead mile failte for the ” plastic paddy’s”..imagine the amount of people who have two Irish parents ,one Irish parent, grandparent etc who left Ireland for whatever reason, whose children know they have Irish blood in them, only to be berated for that very thing, and told that they’ll never be Irish..it doesn’t make sense, are the beraters pissed off that they ended up having to stay in the shitty dysfunctional country that is Ireland…?
