JD Vance has been slammed for making an “awkward” and “gross” cannibalism joke when speaking about Ozempic, as the Vice President appeared to not understand what the medication is for.
In a recent interview with podcaster Theo Von, VP Vance sparked a conversation about Ozempic while recalling a TV commercial he’d seen for a med pack.
“I only saw it briefly, but I could have sworn that two of the medications in this med pack were, and it is advertised as like an emergency medicine, are Ivermectin and Ozempic,” Vance said. “And I’m like thinking to myself ‘What is the situation where you need emergency Ozempic?'”

He continued: “I thought like you know if you have a Donner Party situation, and it’s like alright, you know, we got to suppress our appetites.” The Donner Party was a group of American pioneers who became stranded en route to California in 1846.
The party was trapped in heavy snow in the Sierra Nevada and when food ran out some of the group reportedly resorted to cannibalism to survive, eating the bodies of those who’d already died.
Vance has since received backlash over the bizarre joke. “Usually politicians don’t joke about eating people, exception JD Vance,” an X user wrote as they shared the clip.
“I’m sorry, what? Did he just joke about cannibalism? He’s truly the most awkward person ever,” one person responded. Another commented: “What? Who even thinks like this. Gross.”
Others pointed out that Vance appeared to be unaware that Ozempic is not a weight loss drug. Ozempic is the brand name for the medication semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, which is used to treat type 2 diabetes.
While the injective medication can lead to weight loss as a side effect, it is designed to help diabetics to manage blood sugar levels. One person wrote: “Why is he talking like he is expert on something he doesn’t know about? Ozempic is a diabetic drug. It helps to regulate sugar in diabetics.”
A second added: “@VP Did you know Ozempic is used to treat type 2 diabetes? Or do you figure that anyone listening to you would have to be morons, so you can say whatever you like and they’ll believe you?”
Another commented: “Really really awful that he is joking about this. He probably has no idea ozempic is to treat diabetes…….really cringe worthy.”
