What are the risks of artificial intelligence for children? • FRANCE 24 English

[Music] in this household AI isn’t just a tool create a new image it’s practically part of the family the dad is carrying a suitcase does that work for you just a few instructions we wait and then we print it and in less than two minutes a personalized well-crafted drawing who’s this the mommy yes and here the baby each child has their own favorite item this one’s got pencils this one has a little sheep and that one’s got a book and glasses so you can create whatever you want pretty much what do you mean well you can’t make absolutely anything or everything that pops into your head because the phone doesn’t think like us and it’s not just the children who are having fun to be honest I find it really fun it’s impressive and more enjoyable than just searching on Google clicking through loads of websites and not finding what I’m after and then ending up frustrated if I don’t like the results I just generate another image until I get the one I like to entertain the children or to answer their questions AI has become a go-to tool for this father the family uses AI about 10 times every day like many others AI generated stories and quirky images have all become part of the digital playground on social media parents and children alike are getting creative some children are even turning to AI to help with their homework this young audience is now a key target for tech companies google is currently developing Gemini an AI chatbot designed specifically for under 13s our young users were born into a world with internet as AI becomes more widespread we believe we can offer them safe experiences that let them explore and enjoy everything this new technology has to offer but while AI can be a powerful tool some experts are warning of the potential dangers a child who is learning or who struggles with learning needs to solve problems write summaries organize ideas when they do this specific areas of the brain are activated and that’s how intelligence develops relying too much on AI could affect brain development language memory creativity problem solving all these functions rely on the front part of the brain if those areas aren’t used they’ll be lost more and more pupils are facing the dangers of AI from a very early age in this secondary school classroom over half of them say they use it on a regular basis trust AI because it’s always right well that’s false and so here we have the correct answer you need multiple sources first start searching with Wikipedia then use AI we also have to be with adults you can’t tell AI everything because it could be harmful what do you mean well everything you say will be stored in its data along with scientists this history teacher has created a platform to guide students using AI you have to learn to be cautious the more you use AI on your own at a young age the more likely you are to get caught out young people using AI means increased screen time interactions and behind it all are algorithms they can use these platforms but they should ask themselves “What am I doing and for how long?” Pupils will continue to attend sessions that will better prepare them for a future shaped by AI

Artificial intelligence is becoming part of our everyday lives. More and more families are using it with their children, whether it’s to help with homework or just for fun. But while AI has many benefits, it’s important that both parents and children understand the risks. Our France 2 colleagues report, with FRANCE 24’s Guillaume Gougeon.

  1. If the "What about the children?" grift slows AI, I'll agree for now. However, I somehow think… nope, couldn't even finish typing this before y'all started shilling AI. Don't worry about it destroying children's ability to think critically. This is fine.
