Three Waterford men sent to prison for false imprisonment, ‘sadistic torture’ and robbery of SETU student

  1. This is horrifying, the details are beyond disturbing. For crimes like this, where there appears to be no motivation whatsoever (not withstanding that they happened to rob the victim in the course of their savagery) other than inflicting cruelty and torture (waterboarding! FFS) on another human we need to have a very hard line, and sentence of 4 years for torturing a man and making him drink urine from the ground on social media just really do not fucking cut it IMHO.

  2. Jesus that’s horrific and 4 years is an absolute joke.

  3. At the risk of sounding like everyone’s grandmother: this is like something you’d hear about happening in America.

Absolutely crazy. And the sentencing seems way too low. Sentencing guidelines for crimes like this need reviewing.

  4. – Multiple previous convictions
    – Premeditated, extended violent assault
    – Sentencing discount
    – Concurrent sentences
    – Partially suspended sentence

    It’s like Irish court bingo.

Does anyone seriously believe these criminals are going to go on to become net positive members of society? We should save their future victims by disposing of them sooner rather than later.

  5. Wild. Surely there was another motive behind this. Money owed or he rode one of there ma’s, seems insane for it to be random. Sentences are far to light.

  6. Am I oblivious to some sort of undertone motivation here? Why was this particular man targeted?

  7. Three of them are actually from Dublin, doesn’t make a blind bit of difference I know! they should be buried in the jail. Or else they should spend the next four years perpetually ’dropping the soap’

  8. Absolutely disgusting. Can someone please explain the rationale behind concurrent sentencing because it really doesn’t make any sense to me at all

  9. “It is a most serious, serious offence. It was a sadistic torture this innocent man was subjected to,” said Judge O’Kelly.

Judge O’Kelly said: “It is as shocking a case as this court has had to deal with, and the victim impact statement sets out the gravity of the consequences this has had,” said Judge O’Kelly

And yet the consequences is effectively a 4.5 year sentence max. System is fucked if that’s actually all they could give them and judge is fucked if they could have given more and didn’t. Either way it’s an indictment of how little value is put on the seriousness of an offence if this is the outcome of the worst they’ve seen.

  10. They were from Dublin, not Waterford. Concurrent sentences are stupid.
