‘Weakness masquerading as strength’: Hear Newsom’s blistering speech on Trump as LA protests persist

I want to go in and listen to Governor Gavin Newsom. What’s happening right now is very different than anything we’ve seen before. On Saturday morning, when federal agents jumped out of an unmarked van near a Home Depot parking lot, they began grabbing people. A deliberate targeting of a heav Latino suburb. A similar scene played out when a clothing company was raided downtown. In other actions, a U.S. citizen, nine months pregnant was arreste A four year old girl. Taken. Families separated. Friends quite literally disappea in response. Every day, Angelenos came out to exercise their constitutional to free speech and assembly to protest their government’s ac In turn, the state of California and the city and county of Los Angeles sent our police officers to help keep the peace. And with some exceptions, they were successful. Like many states, California is no stranger to this sort of unrest. We manage it regularly and with our own law enforcement But this again was different. What then ensued was a use of te flashbang grenades, rubber bulle federal agents detaining people and undermining their due proces Donald Trump, without consulting California law enforcement leaders, commandeered 2000 of our state’s National Guard members to deploy on our streets illegal and for no reason. This brazen abuse of power by a president inflamed a combustible situation, putting our people, our officers and even our Nation at risk. That’s when the downward spiral He doubled down on his dangerous National Guard deployment by fanning the flames even harde And the president? He did it on purpose. As the news spread throughout LA for family and friends ramped up Protests started again by night. Several dozen lawbreakers became violent and destructive. They vandalized property. They tried to assault police off Many of you have seen the video clips of cars burning on cable news. If you incite violence, I want to be clear about this. If you incite violence or destroy our communities, you’re going to be held to accou That kind of criminal behavior will not be tolerated. Full stop. Already, more than 220 people have been arrested, and we’re reviewing tapes to build additional cases. And people will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law Again, thanks to our law enforcement of and the majority of Angelenos who protested peacefully, this situation was winding down and was concentrated in just a few square blocks down With that. That’s not what Donald Trump wan He again chose escalation. He chose more force. He chose theatrics over public s He federalized another 2000 guard members. He deployed more than 700 active Marines. These are the men and women trained for foreign combat, not domestic law enforcement. We honor their service. We honor their bravery. But we do not want our streets militarized by our own armed forces. Not in L.A., not in California, not anywhere. We’re seeing unmarked cars, unma in school parking lots, kids afr of attending their own graduatio Trump is pulling a military drag all across Los Angeles, well beyond his stated intent to just go after violent and serious criminals. His agents are arresting dishwas gardeners, day laborers and seam That’s just weakness. Weakness masquerading as strengt Donald Trump’s government is in protecting our communities They’re traumatizing our communi And that seems to be the entire California will keep fighting. We’ll keep fighting on behalf of our people, all of our people, including in the courts. Just yesterday, we filed a legal challenge to Donald Trump’s reckless deployment of American troops to a major American city. Today, we sought an emergency court ord to stop the use of the American to engage in law enforcement activities across Los Angeles. If some of us could be snatched off the streets without a warran based only on suspicion or skin then none of us are safe. Authoritarian regimes begin by targeting people who are at least able to defend themselves. But they do not stop there. Trump and his loyalists. They thrive on division because it allows them to take m and exert even more control. And by the way, Trump is not opposed to lawlessness and violence as long as it serves him. What more evidence do we need than January 6th? Ask everyone. Take time. Reflect on this perilous moment. A president who wants to be bound by no law or constitution perpetuating a unified assault on American traditions. This is a president who, in just over 140 days, has fired government w that could hold him accountable. Accountable for corruption and f He’s declared a war. A war on culture, on history, on science, on knowledge itself. Databases, quite literally, are vanishing. He’s delegitimizing news organiz and he’s assaulting the First Am and the threat of defunding them at threat. He’s dictating what universities themselves can teac He’s targeting law firms and the judicial branc that are the foundations of an orderly and civil society. He’s calling for a sitting gover to be arrested for no other reason than to, in his own words, for getting elected. And we all know this Saturday he’s ordering our American heroe the United States military, and forcing them to put on a vulgar display to celebrate his birthda just as other failed dictators have done in the past. Look, this isn’t just about protests here in Los Angeles. When Donald Trump sought blanket authority to commandeer the National Guard he made that order apply to every state in this nation. This is about all of us. This is about you. California may be first, but it clearly will not end here Other states are next. Democracy is next to Ocracy is under assault before o This moment, we have feared, has He’s taking a wrecking ball. A wrecking ball to our founding historic project. Three co-equal branches of indep government are no longer any checks and bal Congress is nowhere to be found. Speaker Johnson has completely abdicated that responsibility. The rule of law has increasingly been given way to the rule of do The founding fathers, they didn’t lived and died. See this kind of moment? It’s time for all of us to stand Justice Brandeis, he said it best in a democracy, the most important office. With all due respect, Mr. President, is not the presidency And it’s certainly not governor. The most important office is Office of Citizen. At this moment, this moment, we all need to stan and be held to account a higher level of accountability If you exercise your First Amendment rights, please, please do it peacefully. I know many of you are are feeling deep anxiety, stress and fear, but I want you to know that you are the antidote to tha and that anxiety. What Donald Trump wants most is your fealty, your silence to be complicit in this moment. Do not give in to him. That was a blistering speech there from the California governor, Gavin Newsom, responding after days of back and forth between his state and Los Angeles specifically, and the white House and Presiden including comments that the president has made and that if he was, his borders are he would have Governor Newsom arrested something that the gove there invoked as he was essentially referencin not only what we’ve been seeing play out in Los Angeles, which he was plenty critical of, including Trump bypassing the governor there to deploy the National Guard, also sending hundreds of Marines to Los Angeles. He also invoked, the fact that he had implied having him arrested, the preside upcoming military parade that he’s having here in Washing his fight with Harvard. And he warned other states in th in that speech, that, quote, other states are ne He said that Donald Trump is not opposed to that lawlessne And he invoked what happened on January 6th. He also addressed what we’ve been seeing play out over the last several nights in Los Angeles, and condemned the violence and the vandalism. He pointed to the hundreds of rust arrests that have played so far already in that city, and said that they are working through video and compiling additional cases as he thanked the Los Angeles Police Department for the work that it’s done so far, and said it was needless to have the National Guard also deployed there. Those are notable comments coming from the governor. After a vicious back and forth between President Trump and Governor Newsom, as he has repeatedly criticized the job that Newsom has done, and said if it was not for him sending in the National Guard that Los Angeles would be burning to the ground. I want to bring in CNN’s Priscil Alvarez back here with me, also our chief and law enforceme and intelligence analyst, John M But Scott Jennings and Kate Bedi I want to start with you, because Kate, obviously, to hear what we just did from Governor Newsom, he went far beyond just what has been happening in terms of Los Angeles and the protests there, and how the president and the white House have respond I mean, he has essentially was attacking everything that has happened over the last several months. The Donald Trump has been in off he said. The moment that we feared has ar Yeah, I think he’s using this moment to channel some of the en there’s a faction of the Democratic base wants to see from Democratic lea I think this is the kind of thin that people who feel frustrated that the Democrats are not taking on Trump more dir This is exactly the kind of thing they want to see.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said President Donald Trump โ€œchose theatrics over public safetyโ€ in deploying the National Guard to respond to protests in Los Angeles. He criticized the Trump administration for carrying out mass deportations. When immigration raids took place in Los Angeles, โ€œeveryday Angelenos came out to exercise their constitutional right to free speech and assembly, to protest their governmentโ€™s action,โ€ Newsom said. #CNN #News

  1. Most of these ppl are just there to loot not even protest ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ good job with the peaceful protest. Honest family stores being looted and lives destroyed. Iโ€™m talking about the ppl that actually belong here. Not illegal animals.

  2. Newsom speech backfiring and waking up more people realizing he puts Americans at danger and represents law breakers turning a peaceful protest into riots.

  3. Trump unfortunately learned a lot from Recep Tayyip ErdoฤŸan… To avoid discussing the economy, he pits people against each other to prevent his votes from droppingโ€”this is consadile (a play on 'consolidate' and 'deceive').

Youโ€™re the ones who brought Recep Tayyip ErdoฤŸan to power, and now youโ€™ll suffer what weโ€™ve endured for 23 years. Youโ€™ll clench your teeth… You wonโ€™t watch TV series; instead, youโ€™ll constantly watch political programs, asking each other how to stop this trend. And meanwhile, your economy will get much worse."But you still have a strong justice system, and donโ€™t let them take it overโ€”be careful!"
"When it comes to Turks, we know that even if they lose on election night, they will still declare victory. Unfortunately, the only thing left will be millions pouring into the streetsโ€”and we will make that happen. There is no other option left, no institution or mechanism to turn to… At least you still have that. In 1.5 years, at the congress, youโ€™ll have the chance to make them regret it… How wonderful..

  4. Joe Biden and his Administration let in more than 8 Million Immigrants across the Border illegally! We are Removing the "illegal immigrants" they are "illegal" so they are criminals and they will be deported!

  5. Thank you for actually defending your state this time around. We truly appreciate it. Together, we will overcome this and succeed. Let this all be a nightmare only. We gotta protect each other.

  6. Listen to him. Here is your basis in constitution and what you risk โ€ฆ

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Actually, unless the USA wants to follow 1930s Germany, then it really needs to do something
This is close to Kristallnacht โ€ฆ

Kristallnacht or the Night of Broken Glass, also called the November pogrom, was a pogrom against Jews carried out by the Nazi Party's Sturmabteilung and Schutzstaffel paramilitary forces along with some participation from the Hitler Youth and German civilians throughout Nazi Germany on 9โ€“10 November 1938.

  7. Newsom is lying through his teeth. ICE needs a warrant from a judge. They do not randomly go after people. Fon't believe the lies from the Mainstream Media folks….these people are responsible for all the misery and anarchy going on now. Newsom is defending criminals because he wants to become a hero….radical left lunatic, should be charged with treason.

  8. I meet many Americans each year. There is one thing i do not understand. I meet people who are quite the same as my people. They fit in right away. People from Holland and America have many things in common. Many Americans even have Dutch names. But on the screen it seems like these people are like a big minority, and the US is over flooded with wicked people. I only meet normal families who are just like us, the only difference is our language. It must be the wicked have no money to travel so i do not get to see them.

  10. No U.S.citizens have been deported.
California is suffering from bad/ weak leadership. It's time for the law abiding citizens of California and other states and cities to stand up for whats right and not let these anarchist take over our country and values.
This is not about Democrats V/S Republicans anymore, it's about law order and YOUR personal safety.

Rule #1 Don't listen to any news channels with the letter C in the acronym, it is part of the Cult.

  11. I donโ€™t care who you vote for, I donโ€™t believe the government has ever looked out for the American people.. Republicans promise things. Democrats promising. Yet the American citizens still struggle. ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

  12. A sitting governer openly attacking the president for following and protecting the law and US citizens is completely insane and wild af….nothing short from treason!!!

  13. Iโ€™m a legal immigrant from Mexico livinโ€™ in LA, and Iโ€™m with Trumpโ€”I back law and order, gรผey. And I love Jesรบsโ€ฆ and I know Jesรบs loves me too, neta

  14. You know the really dangerous migrants are not the ones looking for employment pick-ups at Home Depot.
What's the logic in targeting illegals who just want an honest job for honest money, but they don't have the papers for?
You know the human traffickers and real gangsters aren't interested in manual labor for eating money.

  15. Well saidโ€ฆ.amazing hearing a politician that can actually speak in full sentences and doesnโ€™t sound like a toddler bullying people the whole time.
We all need to stand up right now. We canโ€™t let these billionaires win. It will only get worse if they do.

  16. If the Guard and Marines were not in Los Angeles, the rioting mob would attack injure and possibly murder ICE agents and also demolish Federal buildings. Newsom would just say then that his cops were not required to help them so all the fault lies with Newsom,Bass and all the Democrat politicians supporting rioters. I f they did not support them, alot of them would quit and go home. Newsom is one of the worst things that ever happened to California.
