  1. Doesn’t this go against their best wishes? It seems like offering a foreign country who’s leader has expressed a desire to occupy your country military presence is a horrible idea.

  2. > Denmark’s Parliament has approved a bill to allow the United States to have military bases on Danish soil, a move that comes as U.S. President Donald Trump seeks to take control of the kingdom’s semi-autonomous territory of Greenland

The irritating thing about trump in this context is the partisan debates over him obscure the important issue of the next century which is -who will control the immense resources of Canada and Greenland as they begin to open up?

Sadly, trump is probably right- I’d doubt that canada continues as a fully independent nation for a hundred more years, and greenland much sooner- especially if global warming makes that access much easier.

Someone is going to have all that stuff, and it’ll either be us or China. Fortunately, we’re in excellent condition to take it.

These are the sort of questions a serious nation interested in future planning would be raising, but alas, we have to have arguments over trump saying mean things instead. The Romans would be very disappointed in us.

  3. He wants Greenland for Nestle. He wants to provide them with natural glacier water.

  4. See, we really don’t want them to. American bases don’t have a good reputation among the local population

Mostly, we don’t like the idea of having a lot of unregulated twenty-something soldiers on leave, showing up in our nightlife without being able to be prosecuted by danish law if they beat up or sexually assaults somebody (as there are documented cases of just this happening in towns near usa bases in foreign land).

Sweden tried to oppose bases as well but were strong armed into accepting. Who knows what threats are made at the negotiation table.

A minor part of it stems from our politicians hoping for advancement into EU positions and fear that opposing this wish will hinder that.

It’s weak, but America is running a bullies game, and we’re just not in a position to fight back. We specced the culture and medicine tech tree and forgot all about warfare.

  5. Not to be pessimistic but I hope you guys enjoy having your sexual assault metrics jump up severely. US forces are well known for terrorizing local women around bases

  6. JEEBUS EFFING CRIPES DENMARK!??! You have **got** to see what’s been going on in the US the last couple of weeks, not to mention since the orange turd took office! Denmark, baby, you know *you are waaaaay smarter than this*. You don’t need either the protection from the base (you’re in Europe, ffs) nor the money (you’re *Denmark*, ffs!) so there’s no good reason to do this while the US is undergoing a fascist takeover.

  7. It is like buying a leash and handing it to your bully to stop annoying you. I know that the US can be horrible enemy but why is Europe sooooo scared of them? Like, i do not see ehy any european cou try can have a good relation with the US now… and the US are not up for an all out war like russia or have a weak currency that can not be used to be scared of sanctions… if anything, they can push the world toward dropping the USD with the help of the US haters in asia. That alone will push the US to either wage a war ot begging to stop. And i personally do not think the US population want an all out war against the rest of the world.

  8. The US already has a base on Danish soil on Greenland. This is not really about bases as such, but about the US getting their own separate corner on some Danish air bases in Jutland.
