Falklands: Should UK negotiate with or defy Argentina? – While Britain currently claims sole ownership of the disputed Falkland Islands, UK records show past governments being willing to compromise and that the question of sovereignty is far from certain.

Only opinion that matters is that of the Islanders
Up until Thatcher getting into power the British government also assumed that one day Northern Ireland would leave the union and become further aligned with the Republic and in the words of Edward Heath “probably not until the new millennium “
Past governments were willing to compromise and were considering negotiating a lease like Hong Kong. Right up until the point where Argentina tried to take it by force.
At that point the option to negotiate goes off the table. They single handedly proved that the views of those who live there do don’t matter.
Plus Argentina don’t have a strong link to the islands historically. Spain has a greater claim over them than Argentina. Just because they are close to the Coastline makes them no more Argentinian than the Channel Islands French.
What’s to negotiate? It’s ours, the people want it to remain like that and Argentinia got utterly fucking smashed when they tried it the other way.
So, to recap:
Democratically: Ours
Politically: Ours
Militarily: Ours
Yeah, I don’t think there’s much left to discuss.
> Argentina’s ambassador to Britain, Javier Figueroa, questioned why, if Britain insists there is no doubt its sovereignty over the islands, it agreed to negotiate with Argentina for many years until shortly before the 1982 war, a conflict that cost 258 British and 750 Argentinian lives.
Because you did a very stupid thing and we fucking stomped you, mate. The landscape changed, sorry mate.
Pretty sure the question of sovereignty was settled when Argentina left with their tail tucked between their legs.
Funny how this ‘story’ or ‘Topic’ reappears now, just as another country is actively trying to regain territory it considers theirs. Its almost like someone is trying to distract attention isn’t it.
Defy Argentina?
They have no legal claim.
They have no Moral Claim.
They have nothing in the way of Military or Finances to effect the outcome here.
How on Earth do do they imagine Britain Defies Argentina when Argentina is in Possession of nothing?
Argentinas continued whining defies logic. How’s that?
I really fail to see Argentina’s case here other than ‘we’re closer so it’s ours’. And the accusations of imperialism from Argentina just seem a bit hypocritical…
