No government, no plan: Brussels braces for credit downgrade

  1. Extremely sad. To me, capital is always something that should represent the entire country and receive special treatment from the goverment, as it is the place to make business, to arrive at etc. Given how many connections cross in Brussels (TGV, DB, Eurostar, airport etc.) I really can’t wrap my head around why the goverment does not subsidise heavily renovations of Brussels Nord, Midi or other central areas of the city – it seems like such an no-brainer to me. Any euro you invest in strategic facilities in Brussels will return to Belgian economy much more in tourism, business and future private investment.

  2. Regardless of there not being a government, I always thought it was a weird logic:

“Losing too much money? Well, let’s change their credit rating **so they lose even more**”.

Which is what happens. They have to pay more on their loans. So they’re losing more money than before.

“Hey, we think they should work in a certain way, and they’re not, so let’s change things so it’s even harder for them to make the change”.

  3. “When the Brussels Region is unable to roll over its debt at a tolerable interest rate, that’s when you can expect that knock on the Prime Minister’s door”

Considering the political reaction to the proposed merger of the police zones, I don’t think that conversation will be quiet and calm, because the PM is going to ask for way more.

  4. Let’s end Brussels as a region. The more time pass the worse it gets. Make it a part of the Flemish region with some linguistic special status.

And before someone call me out as a Flemish wanting to expand its region, I’m Walloon. But I prefer a bit more influential Flemish region than this litteral multi sectorial BOMB

  5. I’m ashamed of Brussels, the first thing people see are those disgusting train stations in Brussels. Destroys our reputation all because of political games.

  6. This showcase the biggest problem with our national politics.

0 accountability from the politicians regardless of what they do.

The debt keep growing in the Brussels region and their parlement don’t give a shit and will reduce their own salary “but only after we get a government”.

The state sees the debt of the Brussels region grow to 20% of their income and instead of stepping up long ago, they’ll wait until the Brussel government has no other option than Belgium taking in the debt.

No politician gives a shit about our country(men) and only care about their petty political games.

  7. Let them go bankrupt. Begging for more federal taxes is a disgrace to this country.

  8. I fell in love with Brussels years ago, but it pains me to see how the politicians “responsible” for it, are doing everything.. but taking responsibility.

I will never vote for the N-VA, but I want them part of the Brussels government so there is more financial oversight over the crumbling PS state-within-a-state machine, being kept alive through clientelism *kuch* Anderlecht *kuch*.

What I propose is to cut the salaries of Bruxellois politicians like Laaouej, Leisterh and all other involved in this game of chess until they agree on a government, put up a declaration and put their signature underneath the a coalition deal. Brussels would have a government very quickly. It is unacceptable that these people get very good money, but refuse too form a government for our capital city, pure out of personal interest.

  9. Oh the irony.

I don’t see how the federal government could help because even with the current reforms, and those already evoke serious protests, the deficit will keep on rising. Imagine they need to give a few billions extra to a region that is handling the prime minister and it’s party with 0 respect.
