More than 200 people are feared dead after an Air India flight bound for London Gatwick carrying 242 passengers crashed in a residential area of Ahmedabad shortly after take-off .

Flight AI171 was bound for Gatwick when the Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed. The 242 people on board included 217 adults and 11 children, a source told Reuters. Of them, 169 were Indian nationals, 53 were Britons, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian, Air India said.

Local police chief GS Malik later the BBC that 204 bodies had been recovered from the scene of the crash, while 41 were injured and being treated in hospital.

Indian PM Narendra Modi said the crash was “heartbreaking”, while Sir Keir Starmer described the scenes as “devastating”.

Pictures from the scene show a large plume of smoke following the crash, with emergency services currently at the scene.

It is believed the plane came down just minutes after departing Ahmedabad airport and crashed onto a hostel for doctors, where it has been reported at least 30 bodies have been recovered.

Air India owner Tata Group offers £85k to families of deceased

Tata Group, which owns Air India, will offer around £85,000 to the families of each person who died in the Ahmedabad plane crash, the company said.

A statement from Tata Sons and Tata Group chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran, posted to X, said: “We will also cover the medical expenses of those injured and ensure that they receive all necessary care and support. Additionally, we will provide support in the building up of the B J Medical’s hostel.

“We remain steadfast in standing with the affected families and communities during this unimaginable time.”

Two people have been found alive following the Air India plane crash, Reuters reported.

Police have found one survivor from the flight, with another found in the hospital and under treatment, according to the Ani news agency.

‘At least 200’ killed in Air India crash – reports

An eyewitness has spoken about the shocking scenes he witnessed when the Air India flight crashed.

He wore a surgical mask during the translated interview that aired on BBC News.

Smoke appeared to billow behind him and people in military uniform and masks could be seen walking around.

The man, who was not named, told BBC News: “I was sitting at home, there was a loud noise, it felt like an earthquake.”

“I came out and saw smoke, I didn’t realise it was a plane crash, then I came here and I found out and I saw the crashed plane – there were many bodies lying on the ground.”

‘Probably the most complex scene I’ve seen pictures of’

A former aircraft accident investigator has said the crash site of the Gatwick-bound passenger plane is “probably the most complex scene that I’ve seen pictures of”.

Tim Atkinson told BBC News: “My initial thoughts are this will be the most incredibly complex and difficult crash site for the investigators, and more immediately for the emergency service workers to be dealing with.

“It is probably the most complex scene that I’ve seen pictures of, I’m very glad I’ve never seen one myself in real life as complex and difficult as this. This is going to be a very lengthy and extraordinarily difficult and awkward crash site for those working on it to be involved in.”

Embassies offer condolences to families of victims

Ambassadors for Canadian embassy in India and the Indian embassy in Portugal have both expressed their condolences to the families of the Air India crash victims on X.

One Canadian national was said to be on board, as well as seven Portuguese citizens.

Gatwick chief executive ‘very saddened’ by crash

London Gatwick chief executive says he was “very saddened” to hear about the Air India crash, and that the airport is working to support relatives of those on board.

Stewart Wingate, the chief executive of London Gatwick said: “We are very saddened to hear about today’s accident involving Air India flight AI171 and our thoughts are with the family and friends of those on board.

“London Gatwick is liaising closely with Air India and a reception centre for relatives of those on board is being set up where information and support will be provided.”

The Civil Aviation Authority ‘supporting the government’

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said it is supporting the government following the Air India plane crash.

In a statement on X, it said: “Our thoughts and sympathies are with those affected by the #AirIndia crash involving a London bound flight.

“We’re supporting the government and other relevant authorities in responding to this incident.”

The authority advised British nationals who require consular assistance or have concerns about friends or family to call 020 7008 5000.

A local police chief says at least 204 bodies were recovered from the Air India crash site, according to Reuters.

The police chief said the bodies found could include passengers and those who died on the ground from the impact of the crash.

More than 200 people were killed when an Air India Boeing 787 bound for London with 242 people on board crashed minutes after taking off from India’s western city of Ahmedabad on Thursday.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is one of the most advanced jets in service and experts say it has a generally strong safety record, with no previous fatal accidents, according to Reuters.

Boeing said it was aware of initial reports and working to gather more information.

The 787-8 aircraft involved in Thursday’s accident was delivered in 2014 and is the smallest of three variants.

The 787-8 typically holds 248 passengers and the larger and longer-range 787-9 carries 296 people.

The largest variant, the 787-10, which also has the smallest range, has 336 seats, according to Boeing data.

King Charles offers condolences to victims

King Charles III said his “special prayers” are with the families of the victims who were involved in the Air India plane crash.

The King said in a written message posted on X: “My wife and I have been desperately shocked by the terrible events in Ahmedabad this morning.

“Our special prayers and deepest possible sympathy are with the families and friends of all those affected by this appallingly tragic incident across so many nations, as they await news of their loved ones.”

Earlier, 100 people were reported to have tragically lost their lives after the plane crashed in a busy urban area shortly after take-off near India’s Ahmedabad airport.

A spokesperson for India’s external affairs ministry said “we have lost a lot of people”.

Randhir Jaiswal told a media briefing: “What has happened in Ahmedabad is a very tragic accident. We have lost a lot of people.

“We extend our deepest condolences to all those who have lost their loved ones.

“There are, I understand, several foreigners also.”

‘Limited’ flights resume at Ahmedabad

A “limited number” of flight operations have resumed at Ahmedabad, a spokesperson for the airport said.

In a post on X, the airport said: “Ahmedabad Airport is now operational with limited flight operations.

“Passengers are advised to contact their respective airlines for the latest flight schedules. Stay tuned to our official channels for real-time updates.”

The airport has also set up a dedicated helpline for those affected by the crash.

Gatwick sets up reception centre for relatives

Gatwick airport is setting up a reception centre for relatives of passengers on board the Air India flight.

The airport’s social media said: “London Gatwick is liaising closely with Air India and a reception centre for relatives of those on board is being set up where information and support will be provided.

“British nationals who require consular assistance or have concerns about friends or family should call 020 7008 5000.”

‘It appears there are no survivors’, police commissioner says

There are believed to be no survivors from the Air India flight that crashed into a residential area shortly after take-off today.

City police commissioner G.S. Malik told the Associated Press: “It appears there are no survivors in the plane crash”, adding that “some locals would have also died” as the plane crashed in a residential area.

“Exact figures on casualties are being ascertained,” he said.

Army and Coast Guard called in to assist after Air India crash

The Indian Army, the National Disaster Response Force, and the coast guard have been drafted in to deal with the aftermath of the Air India crash, India Today reported.

At least 700 personnel have been deployed to the area, as rescue workers continue to help at the scene.
