HARTFORD, CT. (WFSB) – If you’ve driven around Hartford, you may have noticed divots in the road, potholes, or just unsmooth pavement that makes your right bumpy.
On Thursday, the city said that those issues are soon to be a thing of the past after unveiling new AI technology.
The plan is to install it on the city’s public works vehicles and to use AI to “map” Hartford’s streets and identify problem areas both present and future.
All crews have to do is mount a phone to their windshield, follow a few steps, and the app will take pictures of the roads.
The images will be loaded to servers that will help identify issues, including potholes and obstructed street signs.
From there, the streets can be given a score from zero to 100 based on the condition the road is in.
The city public works crews will use that information to come up with a game plan, prioritize the biggest problem areas, and schedule work to get those areas properly taken care of.
“Its gonna give us the tools to maintain our roads, take care of our roads. In using this AI technology, Hartford is on the cutting edge of innovation when it comes to potholes and the basic services that residents want,” said Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam.
It will cost $40,000 to have the technology for the year.
The city is excited though, as they feel it will have a much bigger impact than its contract and extend the life of your vehicles.
