‘We’re a lot stronger when the two nations are working together, and we thought that was the message this sends,’ said bridge walk co-organizer

Despite growing tensions between Canada and the U.S., the annual International Bridge Walk between Sault, Ontario and Sault, Michigan is moving forward June 28.

The annual event brings hundreds of Canadians and Americans together to walk the 4.5 kilometres between the twin Sault Ste. Maries, a tradition that dates back 35 years and is generally a “no brainer” to organize, said Jason Naccarato, president with the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce.

“Obviously, this year is different than the last few years,” Naccaroto told SooToday. “We’re a lot stronger when the two nations are working together, and we thought that was the message this sends.”

Organized by the chambers of commerce on either side of the river, as well as the International Bridge Administration, Naccarato said discussions between all three parties signalled a desire to get out like any other year and celebrate the friendship between the two cities and countries.

Naccaroto said political discussions “ebb and flow,” but highlighted that the friendships on either side of the border span generations, and that events like the bridge walk help to strengthen that.

“Our twin communities of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan are not just neighbours — we are family,” he said.

“We invite everyone to come out on June 28th to celebrate unity, mutual respect, and the shared values that continue to connect our two great nations.”

SooToday reached out to Mayor Matthew Shoemaker, MPP Chris Scott, and MP Terry Sheehan for comment on the annual bridge walk, but did not receive a response prior to publication of this article.

Last year’s bridge walk was cancelled due to inclement weather.

Canadians interested in joining the walk can catch a bus at the Marconi Club beginning at 7 a.m. on June 28, which will provide transport to Lake Superior State University for the walk.

The cost is $10 per person, or $20 per family, and walkers must have either a valid passport, Nexus card, enhanced driver’s license, or INAC.

No bikes, wagons, rollerblades, or skateboards are allowed — but umbrella strollers will be permitted for the walk.
