> “With the exception of Native Americans, we’re all either immigrants, children of immigrants or descendants of immigrants,” Scorsese said from the stage of Taormina’s Ancient Greek Theatre on a balmy evening with Sicily’s Mt. Etna volcano in the backdrop.
> “The country is very young. It’s 250 years old, which is nothing in terms of world history. We’re learning. We’re just crawling. We haven’t begun yet to walk or talk.”
Immigrants makes me think voluntary. Everyone’s immigrant wasn’t voluntary
Native Americans are also immigrants
It’s terrible what they did to his passion project about Jonestown. Kool Aid would have been a hit.
Lest you forget Martin…sons and daughters of humans forcible brought here for economic reasons…slaves ( involuntary immigrants) from the cradle of humanity, Africa…this human jigsaw piece of American sociology shall not be set aside.
Even the indigenous people walked there asses wherever they felt like it in accordance to needs and whatnot. They’ve been doing it for hundreds of years. Everybody knows that
This is like telling a pimp that it’s okay, because we all earn our money some how.
The difference is that some did it legally, and some do not.
Suggesting that everyone’s ancestors “immigrated” here is boneheaded. Sorry, it just isn’t the thing to say for some of us.
While I understand and appreciate his point, the descendants of slaves are not the descendants of immigrants.
Some of us have native and immigrant blood in us.
the US’s disdain for immigrants is irrational, cruel and needlessly destructive
he could’ve included every possible category of people here and there would still be people bitching instead of just ignoring him or accepting that he tried his best to bring people together
Akshually 🤓Native Americans came from Asia, so no exception needed. obviously they were first and stuff tho
Native Americans immigrated to the Americas too, even if they were there long before other immigrant groups.
My people did not immigrate to America
Didn’t native Americans come across an ice bridge from the west?
For the people saying Native Americans are also immigrants, they came over the Bering Land Bridge 15,000 to 20,000 years ago.
Your definition of immigration needs to be amended.
Yeah *Legal* immigrants.
If you are the first ones there you aren’t an immigrant?
First illegal was Christopher Columbus
There’s no such thing as a “descendant of immigrants” unless you would substitute the word “human” and have an identical meaning.
Isn’t the birthplace of humanity supposed to be in Africa?
Wouldn’t that make the Native Americans immigrants as well? Just further back.
Not to mention every European, Asian, Australian, North American, and South American?
This whole “we’re all immigrants” idea kinda falls apart if you take it to an extreme, because if we’re all immigrants, none of us are.
Enslaved and human trafficked people are not immigrants! Again with the disrespect. Do we call someone who is kidnapped and forced to live in their kidnapper’s home a visitor or guest?
This country completely refuses to fully acknowledge the abuse of African Americans.
Dude is trying to say something nice about people who are being demonized for no good reason and forcibly deported out of the country and I see nothing but people virtue signalling about who is and isn’t an immigrant. Bickering over semantics is not what should be dominating the conversation here.
