The Federal Reserve’s upcoming monetary policy meeting is capturing the attention of investors as they juggle concerns about a weakening labor market and persistent inflation above target levels. According to Reuters, the S&P 500 is on track for its third consecutive week of gains, nearing an all-time high as worries over trade barriers have subsided.
While the Federal Reserve is widely expected to maintain current interest rates, the market is keenly awaiting any indication of potential rate cuts in the near future. The federal funds rate has remained at 4.25%-4.50% since a quarter-point reduction last December. Drew Matus, chief market strategist at MetLife Investment Management, noted that the Fed needs to communicate its readiness to act without explicitly committing to changes, as premature rate cuts could exacerbate inflation expectations.
Investors are also closely monitoring the Fed’s updated economic projections, particularly regarding unemployment, which is projected to end 2025 at 4.4%, although some economists, like Larry Werther of Daiwa Capital Markets America, anticipate a higher rate of 4.6% based on recent jobless claims data. This could pave the way for further monetary easing to support the labor market later this year.
Market expectations, as reflected in Fed funds futures, suggest two rate cuts by year-end, with the next anticipated in September. This outlook has been reinforced by recent benign inflation data. Additionally, President Trump’s decision on a successor for Fed Chair Jerome Powell remains a focal point, given his frequent calls for rate reductions.
Further influencing market sentiment are upcoming retail sales data and ongoing trade developments, particularly the temporary pause on certain tariffs set to expire on July 8. The S&P 500 has risen nearly 3% this year, with a 21% rally since its April low, now just 1.6% shy of its February record high.
Marta Norton, chief investment strategist at Empower, remarked on the market’s rapid ascent, highlighting its vulnerability to any developments that could disrupt the current positive narrative.
