Strong tourist activity in Beirut despite the war with Israel • FRANCE 24 English

now it may be a neighboring country that is just emerging from war and the huge port explosion of 2020 but the people of Lebanon are gearing up for the upcoming tourist season and it seems to be working passenger traffic at Rifik Herreria Airport in Beirut surging last month the highest number of arrivals for that period of the year since 2019 well we’re going to cross to Beirut talk to our correspondent Railway Tahoe who joins us from there where tourism then still seems to be a big success story for the country indeed in particular especially after the recent somewhat political stability that the country has been uh facing since the election of President Joseph and the appointment of new Prime Minister Nawam both of them have made sure that the first few weeks of their uh of their political uh uh rule is comes with a significant reform when it comes to uh Beirut airport in particular uh reforms to uh key political appointees at the airport also uh maintenance to the airport to the airport road trying to make sure uh that Lebanon is safe for both uh Lebanese visitors and as well as Arab tourists coming from uh neighboring and other Arab countries we know for a fact that the United Arab Emirates has lifted a prior ban on its citizens traveling to Lebanon uh in particular uh this political stability which came very recently in the past few months has indeed uh resulted in an increase in the number of travelers uh to Beirut airport both Lebanese expats living abroad and as well as uh Arab visitors and foreign visitors as well elsewhere of course Rouad many difficulties still remain there don’t they indeed in particular so we’re talking about an increase in the number of travelers to Beirut at a time when only just a few days ago we saw a number of air strikes by Israel targeting multiple areas in the southern suburbs of Beirut as well as uh continuous air strikes and assassinations by Israel’s in different parts of the country in particular in southern Lebanon at a time when this fragile ceasefire that ended the the war is still uncertain on what could the next phase be we know that Israel and other western nations are asking the Lebanese government and the Lebanese president to uh get moving with disarmingah uh that is something that uh the state forces and the Lebanese army have been doing south of the Lethani River yet no progress north of the Leani River so uh in particular uh there is a lot of potential for tourism in the country especially this summer yet one thing remains uncertain is uh to what extent will this ceasefire with Israel last and whether Israel could be seeking some sort of an escalation over the next few weeks or months brother thanks so much Raa joining us Sarah live from Beirut

Despite the recent war with Israel and political tensions in Lebanon, activity at Beirut Airport is on the rise, the highest in years. Security measures have been significantly enhanced to ensure the safety of travelers, tourism is therefore resuming, as explained by FRANCE 24’s correspondent in the region, Rawad Taha.

  1. The people of Lebanon know they are safe as long they don't live near Hezbollah. Israel has not interest in Lebanese people who want to live in peace.
