Help!

So, what would be your recommendations to get a mobile A/C in this case?

I live in an apartment that only has doors, 4 of them to exit to a balcony (which is narrow rectangular one) and one door in the kitchen that opens top to bottom like a door, those are the only « windows » I have. They let pass a lot of light so in summer I have to keep the external blinds down to keep some heat away in fact, all year long for that and privacy reasons.

I have checked the « weird » net that installs in the door with scotch or velcro and then you open using the zipper to exit the mobile’s unit hose, I think is ugly and not practical for every year.

I have been toying with the idea of removing one door halfs and replace that half with a sheet of wood and then make in said flat surface the necessary exits, plug and play solution.

Last option and probably more elegant is to talk to apartment management (Nicod in this case) to allow me to make a hole in the bottom of doors which I hope is not completely holding glass and put a door to seal this hole like a cat’s door when not in use.

Last but not least, accept that is only four weeks of heavy heat, adapt and survive.

Link to photo of doors/windows in my apartment plus a fan I want to buy and put in some of the walls, space is precious and having 3 pedestal fans is not wise.

Also ceiling fans, are they allowed in apartments?, will my ceiling resist this?, I have an apartment on top of mine btw.

I have done some research and for mobile a/c units, I think brands like Penguin and Kibernetik are more than okay, thoughts?

Thank you!😊

  1. On hot days I only use mobile AC in my bedroom for a few hours before bed. I have my hose going out of my bedroom window, and then I roll down the blinds on top of it. I then use a thick bath towel to seal the gap between the hose and the window. It works really well to get the room down to 21c with no humidity.

  2. Why not just get a standalone fan and pull through? If you do get an AC, the appartment management will likely not let you drill a hole in the window/door unless you install a fixed AC unit or sign a contract stating that you will reverse the hole when you move out. Otherwise this will decrease the appartment value. If you get a permanently installed AC unit they might be fine with it but likely increase your Nebenkosten.

  3. only four weeks? classic Swiss cope, it’s more like 8 weeks, 20 years ago maybe 1 week but last few years like 6-8 weeks and going to 8-12 weeks if climate change continues accelerating.

  4. Midea portasplit. The only thing that makes sense

    Avoid mono blocks

  5. Had a flat like that under the roof, just these big door-like windows… Only solution I found was to use a fan all the time directed towards me, and regularly put wla wet towel on it. The wet towel does wonder, it really turns it into a refreshing breeze.

  6. Ceiling fans should not be a problem, room height may be.

I’m unsure about an AC unit, but mobile units should be fine.

  7. The biggest game changer is the outside fabric shade on the balcony in my experience. You just have to roll it up during violent storms. Otherwise I ventilate in the early morning to have a refreshing breeze and the rest of the time I hole up. But my apartment while south-facing is very well insulated thanks to noise-blocking triple window panes.

  8. We went to Jumbo and got some plexiglass. I cut it to fit the size of the opening when we have the door open enough to feed the big A/C hose out. Then, I cut a hole in that and fed that hose through. Lastly, I cut a wedge of it that fits on top of the door to cover that opening. We use door stops to hold the door in place and masking tape to hold the pieces of plexiglass where we need them when it’s all installed. It works very well. Then, when the A/C is going, we place one fan directly in front of it which is aimed across the room to two more fans – one faces the hallway leading to the back half of our apartment and the other faces our bedroom. We have one A/C unit that cools our whole home this way, even though it’s only rated for one room. Also, we installed ceiling fans (I love those the most!)

  9. Keep open at night, close at 6 am… If you are not doing this already. Should also be done a few days before it gets hot.. works really well in better insulated apartments

  10. I hope one day we’ll realize that this is not 1970 anymore and now summer is really hot and we need AC
