Yes
Haven’t seen this on Whatsapp but the law is legit.
If it’s from your accomodation, yes, it’s a legal requirement.
Unfortunately, it is.
Yeah it is a legal requirement, actually i shall do the same today with my ID
off: this law is a fucking joke
Yup, gives quite a headache to remote accomodations (trekking huts, village accomodation).
It is mandatory. Just tell them that you would provide it upon arrival to the accommodation if you are not comfortable sending it over the Internet.
The law is legit but I would not send it to an unknown contact on WhatsApp. If it’s not your host requesting it, they have no business dealing with your personal information.
Yupp they have to check and track who stayes where on how long. And based on that there is a tax of 1-2eur/day
Yes, this is a quite new, soooo fckiiiing useful law here. Awkward and unpleasant to the guest and the accomodation provider, too. Welcome in our democracy:))
I can see them asking for a picture of ID/passport if you are checking in remotely and picking up the key from a lockbox or something but generally they are supposed to be scanning the actual document at arrival. I think this happens more with apartments and stuff. The law is legit though, and it is a pain in the behind for sure (coming from a hotel worker).
Hi, this is totally normal. You should also send me your bank card information so I set up your card to work perfectly in budapest 😉😉
Do not do that!!
I recoment visiting Slovenia:)
Kindly…
All the commenters here are talking out of their collective asses. I read the law. Yes your host is required to report any guest’s identity to the government. They are required to check your ID, however they cannot require you to send a photographic copy of it. At the latest when checking in, they have the right to scan it in an app designed for this reporting system, but that only extracts your data from the ID card via optical character recognition, and they are forbidden from retaining the photo in their system. These remote ID scan requests that many of these airbnb hosts do are massive GDPR risks, and while I understand the intention (making checking in easier) I simply cannot comprehend why they choose to handle ID photo data processing through fucking email/whatsapp.
Source: I challenged hosts on their bullshit, and nothing bad ever happened. If they insist on remote check in, ask for their written privacy policy, and they will shut up, as almost none of them has, which is a big no-no.
ID scan is ok, but it is only valid when you are in front of them. If they don’t even meet you to see whether it is really your ID, they are also breaking the law.
Hi I work at a hotel. We have to scan every guests id/passport. Even hungarian guests. There is nothing fishy about it.
I never heard of actual scans being required. Yes, it is a (fucking absurd police state bullshit) legal requirement for you and any other guests to provide ID upon checkin, and they do indeed have to record the ID numbers and whatnot. I was just in a hotel a month ago and they didn’t need to scan it. I don’t recommend doing that, just send the ID numbers.
