WASHINGTON – The U.S. military staged a rare parade in downtown Washington on Saturday with a review by President Donald Trump, also its top commander, who turned 79 the same day.
The event to mark the 250th anniversary of the country’s Army took place as recent decisions by Trump’s administration to send National Guard and military troops to quell protests in Los Angeles over his immigration policies have stirred legal and political controversy.

Building in North Korea’s Yongbyon possibly to house new centrifuges
BEIJING – A building currently under construction at the Yongbyon nuclear complex in North Korea’s northwest is possibly intended to accommodate an advanced type of centrifuge for uranium enrichment, according to a Japanese expert.
Yuki Kobayashi, research fellow at the Sasakawa Peace Foundation in Tokyo who is well-versed in nuclear proliferation, recently told Kyodo News he cannot confirm whether the building is a uranium enrichment facility based on satellite images, but Pyongyang is in “desperate need” of such a building for its nuclear program.

Japan team creates device to measure dizziness symptoms in children
NAGOYA – Graduate school students in Japan have developed a device to easily measure symptoms of orthostatic dysregulation, a disorder common among children that causes them physical difficulty getting up in the morning and dizziness when standing.
The team at Nagoya University’s graduate school hopes the device will help sufferers communicate their symptoms clearly when they need to skip classes due to their condition.

Japan firms push for individual investment options for aircraft, cars
TOKYO – Some Japanese firms are looking to provide individuals with opportunities to invest in commercial vehicles such as aircraft and rental cars for island tourism, hoping such products will help investors to broaden their portfolios beyond traditional stockholdings.
In what it calls Japan’s first publicly offered aircraft investment product tailored for individual investors, FPG Securities Co. will start soliciting funds for an Airbus A320-200 from late June, with the minimum investment amount set at 1 million yen ($7,000) per unit.

Judo: Uta Abe back on top with women’s 52-kg worlds gold in Hungary
BUDAPEST – Japan’s Uta Abe claimed her fifth judo world championship Saturday in the women’s 52-kilogram competition, but older brother Hifumi was only able to win bronze as compatriot Takeshi Takeoka topped the men’s 66-kg podium in Budapest.
The 24-year-old Abe, who suffered a shock loss at last summer’s Paris Games, overcame fellow Olympic gold medalist Distria Krasniqi of Kosovo in a hard-fought final in the Hungarian capital.

Baseball: Ohtani homers twice as Dodgers beat divisional rival Giants
