Local businesses speak about tariffs ahead of Father’s Day

  • 15.06.2025

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Grills, tools and sporting goods are some of the most popular gift options for Father’s Day.

Some businesses say this is one of their busiest times of year and others are sharing what they’re seeing consumers pick up ahead of the holiday.

Rudy Hayden is the general manager of Great Outdoor Provision Company in Charlotte. He explains, “Historically speaking June is like our third busiest month of the year. So, we have a lot of repeat customers coming in for Father’s Day gifts, it’s certainly a busy weekend, we have free gift wrapping. And so, yeah, it’s generally a fun and exciting weekend for us.”

As the summer months approach, Great Outdoor Provision Company says sales are picking up. According to the National Retail Federation Americans are expected to spend $24 billion on Father’s Day this year.

Little Hardware’s VP of sales, Kearns Little, says they have seen people buy a variety of things for fathers including smaller gifts.

He shares, “I sell Benchmade knives, Kershaw knives. I have got some really good hand tools that come in cases.”

Although U.S. consumer spending is expected to reach new heights for Father’s Day in 2025, the U.S. Chamber says tariffs could also hike prices of what they consider “classic gifts”.

Great Outdoor Provision Company says they’ve been able to navigate the tariffs.

“We’re very nimble, we’re able to pivot, and work with suppliers to kind of offset that stuff and then focus on other products but I really, I don’t see where it’s affecting our customer base too much,” says Hayden.

Little shared that they have seen some increase and even decreases on certain items too.

“It depends on what we’re talking about, where they get it. But overall, everybody is trying to hold the line, keep our prices the same, and we’re doing the same until we don’t really have a choice.”

For now, this retailer says they are staying optimistic about pricing and how tariffs will impact business.

“You know, everything will get back to normal, in my opinion, and just keep on keeping on,” says Little.
